Kharge’s Remarks on Gujarat Ignite Political Controversy Ahead of Kerala Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

A political dispute emerged as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a rally in Idukki district on February 1, 2025. During his speech, he praised the people of Kerala, characterising them as “educated and clever,” suggesting they would not be easily misled. In his remarks, he contrasted the educational level of Kerala’s residents with those he described as “illiterate” in Gujarat and other regions.

Kharge urged the political leaders of Gujarat, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, to refrain from attempting to mislead the people of Kerala. His comments drew immediate backlash, particularly from members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who viewed his words as an affront to the people of Gujarat.

In his speech, Kharge stated, “Don’t misguide the people of Kerala. They are very clever, they are educated.” This assertion has led to an escalation of tensions between the Congress Party and the BJP with the Kerala Assembly elections approaching.

BJP Responds to Kharge’s Comments

The BJP reacted strongly to Kharge’s remarks, with Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi taking to the social media platform X to voice his criticisms. Sanghavi described Kharge’s comments as disparaging towards the approximately six crore residents of Gujarat and undermining the state’s historical contributions, including figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Narendra Modi.

Sanghavi further accused the Congress party of a sustained campaign against Gujarat, insinuating that such remarks reflected their frustration resulting from being ousted from power in the state. He asserted that the people of Gujarat are politically conscious and will not accept insults directed at their state.

“Gujarat will not forgive,” Sanghavi declared, implying that Kharge’s statements would have political repercussions in both Gujarat and the upcoming Kerala elections. This highlighted the ongoing rivalry between the Congress and the BJP, particularly as both parties seek to influence voters ahead of the polls.

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi also responded, questioning Kharge about the intellectual capabilities of Gujarat’s notable leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Trivedi accused the Congress of utilising divide-and-rule tactics as the election date approaches.

Implications for the Kerala Assembly Elections

With the Kerala Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, 2025, the exchange between Kharge and the BJP has intensified the political atmosphere in the state. Both parties are vying for electoral support in a region known for its unique political landscape and active voter engagement.

Kharge’s remarks have been perceived as an effort to reinforce the Congress’s image as a champion of educated and discerning voters in Kerala, while simultaneously discrediting the BJP’s tactics. The BJP’s sharp responses underscore the significance of public perceptions and regional pride within Gujarat, as the parties prepare for the forthcoming elections.

As the campaign unfolds, it remains to be seen how these comments will affect voter sentiment in Kerala and whether they will resonate with the electorate, given the complex socio-political dynamics at play in the state. Both parties are expected to intensify their outreach efforts in the lead-up to polling day, with a focus on key messages aimed at influencing voter preferences.
