Himanta Biswa Sarma Predicts BJP-Led NDA Will Secure 90 to 100 Seats in Assam

The CSR Journal Magazine

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed strong confidence in the upcoming Assam assembly polls, which are scheduled for May 9, 2025. He stated that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is likely to win between 90 and 100 seats. Sarma’s remarks were made during a roadshow in Jorhat, where he was actively campaigning alongside BJP supporters.

During the event, he responded to criticisms from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, characterising him as a “crackpot” who makes unsubstantiated claims. Sarma dismissed Gandhi’s remarks, reinforcing his stance on the NDA’s anticipated success in the elections.

When asked about specific policies that the NDA plans to implement if they secure victory, Sarma mentioned the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as well as several other legislative measures intended to address immigration and social issues. He articulated that significant changes are on the horizon if the NDA retains power in Assam.

Rebuttal to Opposition Claims

In response to criticisms about governance, Sarma targeted the Congress party, specifically calling out Gaurav Gogoi. He contended that Gogoi would fail to win his seat and dismissed the Congress leader’s claims of a growing momentum against the BJP. Following his comments, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also shared his assurance regarding the NDA’s performance, stating that they expect to win nearly 100 seats collectively with their allies.

Sonowal articulated a firm position against illegal immigration, maintaining that the BJP government has always been vigilant in its efforts to address the issue. He highlighted ongoing initiatives and actions aimed at preventing unauthorised settlers from occupying land in Assam, showcasing the party’s commitment to regional security and governance.

Earlier this month, Gandhi characterised Sarma as “the most corrupt Chief Minister in the country,” further intensifying the political discourse surrounding the upcoming elections. He warned that Sarma would face significant consequences for his governance if the Congress party succeeds in the polls.

Opposition’s Perspective and Alliances

The Congress party is mounting a formidable challenge to the BJP-led NDA by forming a six-party coalition, which includes the Assam Jati Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, CPI(M), CPI(ML), and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference. Gogoi has spoken out about a perceived “wave of change” sweeping through Assam, stating that residents are eager to put an end to the perceived mismanagement of the past decade.

According to Gogoi, voters are poised to reject what he describes as a decade of oppressive rule and corruption under the current administration. He expressed confidence that the people of Assam are looking for a return to a more accountable and transparent governance model under a Congress-led alliance.

As political rivalry intensifies, both alliances are preparing for the final stretch of campaigning leading up to the election date. The outcome of the elections will be crucial in determining the future political landscape in Assam, as the votes are scheduled to be counted on May 4, 2025.
