Vijay Advocates Statehood for Puducherry, Criticises Opponents

The CSR Journal Magazine

Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has committed to advocating for full statehood for Puducherry as he embarks on the party’s initial campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections. Speaking at a large rally, he directed strong criticism towards established political parties, dubbing the AINRC-BJP alliance as “tired” and the DMK-Congress collaboration as “confused.”

The rally served as a platform for Vijay to question the national parties’ failure to secure full statehood for Puducherry despite their influence at the Central level. He articulated this issue as a significant concern for voters, contending that both major alliances have failed to address governance issues impacting the territory.

The actor-turned-politician underlined his belief that the time is ripe for a new political alternative, asserting that the current political landscape does not meet the aspirations of the people of Puducherry.

TVK’s Stand in the Political Landscape

As they prepare for the election scheduled for April 9, TVK aims to pose a significant challenge to the incumbent All India NR Congress (AINRC), which operates within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This election marks the first attempt by TVK to secure seats in the Puducherry Legislative Assembly, as they seek to disrupt the existing political status quo.

Vijay conveyed his firm belief that voting for any of the two main alliances would be unproductive, pushing for the narrative that Puducherry deserves effective governance that prioritises the needs of its citizens. He expressed that with a TVK mandate, the union territory could witness a positive transformation.

The Legislative Assembly, comprised of 30 members, is approaching the end of its current term, which will conclude on June 15, 2025. Hence, the stakes are particularly high for the upcoming elections.

Historical Context of Recent Elections

The political landscape of Puducherry has seen varying outcomes in recent elections. During the 2021 Assembly Elections, the AINRC was able to secure the largest number of seats, winning ten. The DMK followed with six seats, and both the BJP and Congress secured six seats each. Voter turnout in that election stood at 84.8 per cent.

In contrast, the 2016 elections yielded a different result, with Congress achieving a majority with 15 seats, while the AINRC managed eight, the AIADMK four, and the DMK two. The turnout for that election was reported at 83.6 per cent.

The trends from these past elections illustrate the competitive nature of Puducherry politics, showcasing a landscape that is ripe for new entrants like TVK as voters seek alternatives to the existing political affiliations.
