Man Dies in Odisha After Live Fish Gets Lodged in Throat While Fishing

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident unfolded in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha on Friday, resulting in a man’s death due to a live fish becoming trapped in his throat. The victim, identified as Abinash Bijuli, was engaged in fishing at a pond in Dighi village under the jurisdiction of the Bangriposi police station.

Reports suggest that Abinash caught an Indian Koi fish, known locally as ‘Kau,’ during his fishing activity in the morning hours. In an attempt to secure the fish and prevent its escape, he allegedly placed it in his mouth. This action led to a critical situation when the fish started to wriggle and became lodged deeper in his throat.

As Abinash began choking and was unable to breathe, immediate help was sought. However, details surrounding his condition remained grim, with bystanders reportedly unable to intervene effectively. Tragically, despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to suffocation.

Reactions from Family Members

This revelation has raised concerns about the quality of medical services available in the area, particularly in emergency situations. Family members reiterated their frustration over the lack of timely intervention, which they believe may have contributed to the tragic outcome.

Community members have also been left in shock, reflecting on the dangers associated with fishing practices in rural areas. Locals have highlighted the need for greater awareness regarding safety measures when handling live fish, particularly for children and inexperienced fishermen.

Calls for Improved Safety Measures and Awareness

In light of this incident, discussions are emerging within the community regarding the importance of training and educating individuals on safe fishing practices. Many locals are advocating for workshops and awareness programmes aimed at informing people about the risks involved when interacting with live fish.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the potential hazards present in seemingly innocuous activities like fishing. Residents are now voicing the necessity for better emergency care protocols in local clinics, enabling them to respond promptly to cases involving choking or similar emergencies.

Authorities are being urged to take action in ensuring that local medical facilities are equipped to handle urgent health crises while establishing clear guidelines for fishermen on safe practices. The community hopes that heightened awareness and preparedness will prevent similar occurrences in the future.
