Stock Markets Closed Today for Good Friday

The CSR Journal Magazine

Stock markets in India are closed today, April 3, 2026, in observance of Good Friday. This closure affects both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), halting all trading activities across various segments. As a consequence, there will be no transactions for equities, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, interest rate derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLBs) throughout the day.

The recent sessions in the stock markets have shown significant fluctuations influenced by global cues, leading to shifting investor sentiment. Adding to this uncertainty, a series of holidays have been observed recently, marking this week as a shortened trading week, particularly following the Ram Navami holiday on March 26. Traders will have to wait until markets reopen on April 6, which is Monday, to resume their trading activities.

It is worth noting that the closure on Good Friday extends beyond equity markets to encompass the commodity markets as well. The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will also remain shut today, preventing any trading in commodities.

Global Market Impact

On a global scale, many major markets are also closed for Good Friday. This includes exchanges in the United States, United Kingdom, and several European countries. In contrast, trading in some Asian markets is still operational. While markets in China and Japan are active, significant financial centres such as Hong Kong and Singapore are closed.

Prior to the holiday, Indian markets showed a pronounced recovery on Thursday. The benchmark indices regained ground sharply from low points, marking their second consecutive session of gains. The Nifty 50 index increased by 530 points from its lowest value of 22,182.55 to finish at 22,713.10, marking a gain of 33.70 points or 0.15 per cent.

The BSE Sensex also demonstrated a noteworthy recovery, climbing 1,774 points from its day’s low to close at 73,319.55, an increase of 185 points or 0.25 per cent. This rebound was predominantly driven by the information technology stocks, contributing positively to the overall market.

Upcoming Trading Holidays in 2026

According to the trading calendar for 2026, the stock markets will observe multiple holidays throughout the year. Apart from the closures observed earlier, including an extra holiday for the Mumbai BMC elections on January 15 and Republic Day on January 26, several additional holidays are planned. In March, markets were closed in observance of Holi on March 3, Ram Navami on March 26, and Mahavir Jayanti on March 31.

Looking forward, upcoming holidays include Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1, and Bakri Id on May 28. The latter half of the year will also see closures for Muharram on June 26, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, and Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. Other significant holidays include Dussehra on October 20, Diwali Balipratipada on November 10, Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24, and the year’s final holiday, Christmas, on December 25.

An interesting point to note is that there will be no dedicated holiday for Diwali this year since the festival falls on a Sunday. However, a special Muhurat Trading session will take place on Sunday, November 8, 2026. Specific timings for this event will be disclosed at a later date. In the meantime, traders will be keeping a close watch on global cues while awaiting the next trading session on Monday.
