Nepal Court Issues Two-Day Remand for Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli

The CSR Journal Magazine

A court in Kathmandu has granted a two-day remand to former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in relation to the events surrounding the Gen-Z protest that took place in September. The order was issued by Judge Purushottam Khatiwada Kshetri at the Kathmandu District Court, allowing law enforcement to further their investigation into allegations of misconduct during the demonstrations. Oli was taken into custody on March 30 and began providing his statement on April 3 in connection with the incidents that resulted in casualties during the protest, which occurred on September 8 and 9, 2025.

Currently, Oli is receiving medical treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Due to ongoing health complications, authorities are conducting their inquiries at the hospital rather than at a police facility. Police spokesperson Pawan Kumar Bhattarai indicated that medical professionals advised against Oli’s immediate release from the hospital, therefore enabling investigators to question him there. The court found it necessary to extend his remand as his statement had not yet been fully recorded at the time of the hearing.

Oli was apprehended at his residence in Gundu, with his subsequent hospitalization occurring the next day. Investigators from both the Kathmandu District Police Range and the District Government Attorney’s Office are leading the questioning process. This new remand follows a previous five-day period granted by the Kathmandu District Court, which was initiated following the presentation of both Oli and his former home minister Ramesh Lekhak. The request made by police for an additional remand was approved to continue the inquiry into the events of the Gen-Z protest.

Ramesh Lekhak in Custody

Ramesh Lekhak, the former home minister, remains in custody at the Kathmandu District Police Range, where his statements are currently being recorded. His earlier statement process had already been completed at a nearby government attorney’s office. In a unique arrangement, Lekhak’s second remand was authorized via a video call from custody. This showcases the flexibility in procedures being adopted by the authorities to facilitate the ongoing investigation.

A probe commission, chaired by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, was established to look into the violence and resulting casualties during the Gen-Z movement in the Bhadra region. The commission’s recommendations led to the arrests of both Oli and Lekhak. The events of the protest have drawn significant public attention and scrutiny, highlighting issues of accountability and governance in Nepal.
