The CSR Journal Magazine

India and Tajikistan convened the fifth round of Foreign Office Consultations on April 2 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The meeting was led by Ambassador Sibi George, Secretary (West) from India, and Idibek Kalandar, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Tajikistan. This session aimed to evaluate various aspects of bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

During the consultations, officials examined the progress and status of cooperation in several key areas, including political, defense, security, trade, economy, culture, education, and consular matters. Both sides engaged in discussions regarding their collaborative efforts within multilateral frameworks and exchanged views on regional and global issues of shared concern.

Meeting with Tajik Foreign Minister

Following the consultations, Ambassador Sibi George met with Sirojiddin Muhriddin, the Foreign Minister of Tajikistan. Their discussions focused on enhancing the mutually beneficial partnership and expanding the avenues for bilateral engagement between the two countries.

During his visit, Secretary (West) interacted with the Indian community and Friends of India in Dushanbe, recognizing their efforts in reinforcing India-Tajikistan relations. These interactions reflect India’s commitment to fostering connections with its diaspora.

As part of the visit, Secretary (West) inaugurated three India Corners at prominent educational institutions in Tajikistan. These locations include the Tajik State Pedagogical University named after Sadriddin Ayni in Dushanbe, the Institute of Economy and Trade at the Tajik State University of Commerce in Khujand, and the Professional Technical Innovation Lyceum in Kulob. The establishment of these centers is aimed at promoting cultural and educational exchanges.

Gifts and Donations to Foster Sports and Culture

In addition to the inaugurations, Secretary (West) presented a collection of Indian musical instruments to the Tajik State Institute of Culture and Arts named after Mirzo Tursunzoda. He also donated football sets, manufactured in India, to the national boys’ and girls’ football teams of Tajikistan. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to encourage youth exchange and sports collaboration between the two nations.

The visit by Secretary (West) aligns with India’s ‘Extended Neighbourhood’ policy which focuses on strengthening relationships with Tajikistan and other Central Asian countries. This policy emphasizes the historical bonds of friendship and cooperation that India shares with the region.

Both parties agreed to arrange the next round of Foreign Office Consultations at a mutually convenient date in New Delhi, furthering their commitment to ongoing dialogue and collaboration.
