Ayodhya is preparing for a historic milestone as the city gears up for a spectacular flag-hoisting ceremony atop the 191-foot spire of the Ram Temple. The celebrations will officially commence on Thursday with the auspicious Kalash Yatra.

On November 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the flag-hoisting ceremony, marking a moment of immense cultural and spiritual significance. Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, the temple town is witnessing rapid transformation as it steps into a new era of pride, development, and global recognition.

Ayodhya’s Tourism Boom after Ram Temple Construction

Once known mainly for its religious heritage, Ayodhya is fast emerging as Uttar Pradesh’s biggest tourism hub. Before the construction of the Ram Temple, the city recorded around 60 lakh visitors in 2020. However, with the temple’s completion, Ayodhya has seen an unprecedented tourism surge.

Between January and June this year alone, approximately 2,300 lakh pilgrims and tourists arrived, setting a historic record. Officials estimate the figure may surpass 5,000 lakhs by year-end. The “double-engine government,” led by Prime Minister Modi and CM Yogi, is credited with this remarkable transformation.

Reviving Ayodhya After Decades of Neglect

The government asserts that earlier administrations ignored Ayodhya due to vote-bank politics, resulting in stagnation. Since assuming office in 2017, CM Yogi made Ayodhya’s redevelopment a top priority. Initiatives such as the grand Deepotsav celebrations on Diwali and a comprehensive master plan laid the foundation for the city’s revival. With the Ram Temple’s monumental inauguration in 2024, Ayodhya is now being developed as a hi-tech, future-ready city projected for completion by 2031.

Vision 2047: Building a Global Spiritual Capital

The long-term vision for Ayodhya extends beyond religious tourism — the city aims to become a global spiritual centre by 2047. Inspired by its ancient legacy, the development blueprint emphasizes Ayurveda-based wellness, nature-inspired living, luxury cottage accommodations, water sports, river cruises, and helicopter tourism. Plans also include Vedic learning institutions and yoga academies to attract long-term international visitors.

Massive Infrastructure Push Worth ₹85,000 Crore

Ayodhya’s growth is backed by large-scale investments from both central and state governments, amounting to nearly ₹5,000 crore directly for city development and part of an overall investment ecosystem of ₹85,000 crore.

Uttar Pradesh’s tourism revenue is expected to reach ₹70,000 crore in the coming years, with Ayodhya contributing nearly a quarter of the total. Presently, the temple town generates around ₹8,000–12,500 crore annually through various tourism-related activities.

Ayodhya at the Heart of UP’s Trillion-Dollar Goal

Ayodhya’s tourism boom has strengthened its economic footprint, the city alone contributes approximately 1.5% to Uttar Pradesh’s GSDP. As UP works toward becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy, Ayodhya is emerging as a key driver through tourism, services, and related manufacturing activities. The city that was once primarily a spiritual landmark is now a vibrant centre of economic activity and cultural resurgence.

Developing a Smart and Eco-Friendly Ayodhya

A green, sustainable township is being developed on 1,407 acres under the Ayodhya Greenfield Township project, costing ₹2,180 crore. Part of the ‘Vedic Expansion Plan,’ the township aims to efficiently manage future population and tourist influx.

Major projects such as the Ram Van Gaman Path (₹4,403 crore) and additional township expansion (₹2,182 crore) are underway. The city’s population, currently around 11 lakhs, is projected to grow to 24 lakhs by 2031 and 34 lakhs by 2047, prompting planned land-use and urban development strategies.
