70,000 Vehicles Enter Shimla During Long Weekend, Over 40,000 From Outside The State

The CSR Journal Magazine

Approximately 70,000 vehicles reportedly entered Shimla district during the recent long weekend, with nearly 40,000 vehicles coming from outside Himachal Pradesh. This influx prompted the local police to mobilise over 200 personnel to manage the heavy traffic conditions effectively. Additional Superintendent of Police (Shimla City), Mehar Panwar, provided insights into the deployment and arrangements made to ensure smooth traffic movement.

According to Panwar, the Shimla region had been divided into five sectors for better organisation. Each sector was managed by an officer of the rank of Non-Gazetted Officer (NGO), and personnel from local police stations were stationed in their respective areas to assist the traffic wing. Police personnel were actively engaged throughout the day and night to ensure the situation remained under control.

The continuous presence of police, alongside station staff, significantly contributed to the effective management of traffic during this bustling period. Their strategic deployment was vital in coping with the challenges posed by the substantial number of visitors arriving in Shimla.

Impact of Ongoing Road Construction Activities

Further complicating the traffic situation was ongoing construction work on the National Highway between Mashobra and Dhalli Chowk. A single lane was being used for traffic, leading to periodic congestion. While acknowledging the delays caused by the construction, Panwar assured that police personnel were deployed consistently to handle the traffic efficiently.

According to reports, the tarring work on the highway was necessary but resulted in some restrictions. Despite this, the police remained vigilant and ready to manage any arising traffic issues throughout the day. The overall traffic management plan already in place was reported to be effective during the summer tourist season and will be reinforced further as the tourist season progresses.

Moving forward, Panwar stated that the traffic management plan would undergo periodic reviews and adjustments to meet the evolving needs of the situation. Continuous enhancements would be implemented to ensure an efficient system.

Future Preparations for Increased Traffic Volume

Given the anticipated increase in vehicle numbers in the coming days, the Shimla Police are preparing additional measures to maintain order on the roads. Panwar reiterates the importance of proactive traffic management strategies, including the implementation of vehicle-specific diversion arrangements to prevent excessive congestion in core areas.

Vehicles required to proceed beyond Shimla will be directed accordingly through diversion stickers, which help outline routes and prevent unnecessary access to congested parts of the city. Additionally, heavy vehicles are typically permitted access to Shimla city before morning peak traffic times or after the evening peak to ease the load on the roads.

Panwar issued a plea to both tourists and local residents to adhere to traffic regulations and support the traffic police in their efforts to maintain order. Cooperation from the public is essential in executing effective traffic management strategies, especially during busy periods.

As the police predict a rise in traffic volume over the following days, they remain steadfast in their commitment to managing and supervising major routes in Shimla. The preparation and planning put into place aim to enhance the ability to accommodate the significant influx of vehicles expected during peak tourist seasons.
