7 UP Border Districts Put On High Alert Amid Nepal Unrest Following PM Oli’s Resignation

The CSR Journal Magazine

In response to escalating political unrest in Nepal, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna announced heightened security measures across seven districts bordering the Himalayan nation. This follows the resignation of Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli amid widespread youth-led protests against corruption and a controversial social media ban.

High Alert Along the Indo-Nepal Border

The DGP confirmed that all seven border districts,  Shravasti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Siddharthnagar, and Maharajganj, have been placed on high alert. Additional civil police have been deployed, and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) outposts, local police stations, and transit points are under round-the-clock surveillance. Check posts have been reinforced, and mobility across the 600-km border has been restricted to prevent any cross-border disturbances.

“Coordination with central forces and Nepalese security agencies is ongoing to avoid any breach in security,” said DGP Rajeev Krishna, adding that communication lines remain open with Nepalese authorities and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Support for Stranded Indians

A special control room has been established at the UP Police Headquarters in Lucknow to assist Indian nationals stranded in Nepal. Three helpline numbers, 0522-2390257, 0522-2724010, and 9454401674 (also available on WhatsApp), are operational 24×7. The DGP confirmed that efforts are being made to facilitate the safe return of Indian citizens trapped amid the violence.

Border Violence and Prison Breaks

The unrest in Nepal took a violent turn as protesters torched government buildings, including the Parliament and President’s office in Kathmandu. At least 19 people have died and over 500 were injured during clashes with police. The protests, initially sparked by a now-revoked ban on major social media platforms, have spilled into border towns such as Nepalgunj and Sonouli.

Authorities reported the escape of multiple inmates from a Nepalese prison during the chaos. Nine of them were captured after crossing into India, five in Siddharthnagar and four in Maharajganj. They are currently being interrogated by the SSB and local law enforcement.

Trade Disruptions and Local Tensions

Tensions have impacted trade, with over 200 Indian truckers stranded at the Sonouli border in Maharajganj due to security concerns. An 8-km long queue of trucks has formed, as fears of violence and property damage grow on the Nepalese side.

The Uttar Pradesh government continues to monitor the evolving situation, with further measures to be implemented based on ground reports from the border regions.
