Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has confirmed the appointment of Zaheer Khan as their new head coach, with the decision reportedly influenced by MS Dhoni’s preference for familiar collaboration. The cricketer is nearing his 48th birthday and has a distinguished record, having played 92 Test matches, 200 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 17 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for India. He is well-remembered for his crucial role as the highest wicket-taker during India’s victorious 2011 World Cup campaign, where he took 21 wickets.

Transition from Fleming to Khan

Stephen Fleming announced his exit from CSK in July 2026, as he transitions to the role of head coach for the England Test team. His departure marks the end of an era for CSK, during which he played a significant role in securing five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles. Zaheer Khan brings a wealth of experience both as a player and as a former mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants in the recent IPL season.

The decision to appoint an Indian coach was made by CSK’s cricket management committee, which includes Dhoni, team captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and owner Rupa Gurunath. This shift marks a strategic choice in light of the franchise’s historical performance and the cultural dynamics of the IPL.
