Yogesh Singh Begins Second Term As Delhi University Vice-Chancellor

The CSR Journal Magazine

Yogesh Singh has commenced his second consecutive five-year term as Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, effective from October 8, 2026, and extending until October 2031. His reappointment signifies a notable development for the institution, being the first instance under the revised statutes that enable a vice-chancellor to receive a second term. Singh originally took office on October 8, 2021.

The reappointment was sanctioned by President Droupadi Murmu in her role as the university’s Visitor and was confirmed by the Union Ministry of Education in July this year. This extension of tenure comes following significant modifications introduced during his first term, particularly in the areas of educational structure, admissions process, and curriculum design.

Key Changes Implemented During First Term

During Singh’s initial term, several significant changes were made which have transformed the admissions landscape at Delhi University. One of the prominent alterations was the adoption of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), streamlining the admission process for undergraduate programmes. Additionally, the university introduced the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The roll-out of the new Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022 brought forth reforms that included multiple entry and exit options and multidisciplinary learning opportunities. These strategic changes aimed to provide students with increased flexibility in selecting subjects and arranging their degree courses. The establishment of new academic centres and a restructuring of various colleges and departments further complemented these educational reforms.

Through these initiatives, Singh’s administration has endeavoured to enhance the overall academic experience, promoting a more versatile and dynamic learning environment. With the reappointment confirmed, these advancements will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the university’s academic trajectory.

Reappointment and Its Significance

The reappointment of Singh is particularly noteworthy in light of the amendments made to Delhi University’s statutes in 2023, which permit the vice-chancellor to seek reappointment for an additional five-year term without the need to apply alongside other candidates. This legislative change marks a shift in governance and operational dynamics.

Prior to Singh’s tenure at Delhi University, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Technological University from 2016 to 2021. His extensive experience in educational leadership also encompasses roles at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, establishing his credentials within academic administration.

Singh’s continuation in the role ensures a degree of stability as the university advances in implementing substantial academic and administrative reform. The ongoing focus on the NEP framework, four-year undergraduate courses, and CUET-based admissions underscores the commitment to evolving higher education standards at the institution.

Future Outlook for Delhi University

As Singh embarks on this new term, the focus will remain on the ongoing implementation of the reforms that were set in motion during his first tenure. The second term will be crucial in consolidating the changes already enacted, particularly those affecting academic processes and departmental management.

The university’s strategic direction will continue to evolve under Singh’s leadership, with an emphasis on adapting to the contemporary educational landscape and meeting the needs of its diverse student body. By maintaining continuity in leadership during this transformative period, Singh aims to guide Delhi University towards further advancements and achievements.

With significant reforms already in place, the upcoming years are anticipated to witness further innovations and improvements, solidifying the university’s reputation as a leading educational institution in India.
