Chinese President Xi Jinping completed his three-day visit to the United States, stating that the discussions with President Donald Trump had added “new substance” to the bilateral relationship. Xi expressed optimism for further enhanced cooperation, highlighting the significance of this visit in the context of China-US ties.

During a joint appearance at the White House, Xi conveyed his aspirations for “brighter prospects” in the relationship. The visit commenced with a unique welcome from Trump at the airport and included a series of meetings aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic collaboration.

On the last day of his visit, both leaders engaged in discussions, followed by a visit to the National Archives. While there were no formal declarations made regarding the outcomes, the talks were perceived as fruitful, contributing to a growing partnership between the two nations.

Discussions and Agreements Between the Duo

President Trump expressed that the visit had resulted in “tremendous strides,” particularly for American agricultural producers. He indicated that American farmers would benefit significantly from the agreements made during the discussions. The dialogue reportedly included matters relating to goods that will be traded under more favourable terms.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed that both sides had come to agreements regarding several products, including agricultural items and Chinese consumer goods deemed non-sensitive. Trump noted that more details would be provided shortly, indicating a commitment to transparency regarding future economic engagements.

Xi indicated his eagerness to meet Trump twice more within the year, specifically at the APEC Summit in China and the G20 Summit in the United States. This continued dialogue underlines their mutual interest in fostering a stable and productive relationship.

Collaborative Efforts on AI and Economic Stability

In discussions surrounding technological advancements, Xi pointed out the impressive capabilities of both countries in artificial intelligence. He emphasised the need for cooperation rather than competition, asserting that both nations should leverage their strengths to benefit from shared advancements.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement outlining Xi’s approach to AI, which called for its development to remain under human control. Xi advocated for ongoing dialogue about the risks and rewards associated with AI technologies, urging collaborative actions to prevent potential misuse.

Despite the lack of specific policy announcements, Xi maintained that the discussions had introduced a new framework for the collaboration of both economic and trade teams from China and the US. The intent to stabilise ties through cooperation was highlighted, reflecting the need for mutual respect and fairness in future engagements.
