Why Did North India Suddenly Turn Cold Again

The CSR Journal Magazine

An unusual spell of rain has lowered the temperature in Delhi NCR. While the capital had already entered the summer season, fresh rain with cool winds has forced residents to layer once again. Areas such as Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, and Gurugram are experiencing fresh showers and gusty conditions.

Why has the weather changed all of a sudden?

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this change is due to the active western disturbance. The disturbance is caused by the 1,000-kilometre rain band currently active across the regions, which is lowering the temperature across north India. Temperature recorded on Friday at the Safdarjung station was 16°C, about 4.5 degrees below the normal temperature. The maximum temperature recorded was 26.8°C, which was 5 degrees below average.

Why is this condition unusual?

This condition is rare as per the Climate scientist Dr. Pradeep, he said that such a system features a long, straight through line that spans over thousands of kilometres, this is very rarely seen. He even warned that this unusual formation has the potential to cause thunderstorms, hailstorms, and dust storms across all the regions it is spreading over. Earlier predictions suggested this system would affect northwest, central, and eastern India from March 20 to March 25, however, it has already started showing effects. An independent weather analyst Preeti Singh from Rajasthan suggests that this formation is now at a stage of complete intensification and has the capacity for moderate to heavy rainfall.

The impact of the unusual system is seen not only in Delhi but also in some parts of Uttar Pradesh. It is expected the system will eventually shift eastward.

How long will this bring relief?

Although the structure has brought some relief from the summer, it is expected to be short-lived; immediately after the disturbance shifts, the temperature will rise. Daytime temperature can go up to 31°C or 32°C early next week and night temperatures are likely to reach 12°C and 14°C. It is expected that the weather system is expected to move eastward after the evening of March 20, but there is a possibility of additional disturbances between March 23 and 28.
