Election in Bangladesh is scheduled in February, and ahead of this a major development is happening, two-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, is returning to his country after 17 years on December 25, 2025. His return is currently the most discussed topic in Bangladesh, as he is returning at a time when the country is going through a very difficult time, political unrest, shooting and protest is rocking the nation.
Why is political unrest escalating in Bangladesh?
Political tension in Bangladesh has been rising with each passing day; there have been many violent outbreaks and protests across the nation. Violent protests escalated after the assassination of Osman Hadi, leader of Inqaib Moncho movement, and another shooting of a political leader from the Jatiya Sramik Shakti in Khulna. Such incidents have toppled the law-and-order situation in the country ahead of general elections. Besides these violent events, minority groups have been targeted by extremists, a young Hindu man named Dipu Chandra Das was killed recently. Amidst this unrest, Tarique Rahman is returning to his homeland.

Who is Tarique Rahman?
Tarique is the eldest son of Khaleda Zia and has been staying in exile in London since 2008. He was arrested in the year 2007 and released later and he thereafter moved to London for medical treatment and settled there. He is a big name in Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and it is being apprehended that he might take up key roles in both party campaigns and also if the party comes to power. His party has made special arrangements for his grand welcome. However, his return has raised questions and speculation in political circles, as it’s just a month away from the election. Speculation is that he is simply coming back to see his mother, who is undergoing treatment in Dhaka hospital.
In the political corridor, it is being discussed that Tarique is coming back to galvanize support for his party. Reports claim that the party is also preparing to give him a key position. As per political critiques, his presence during election can create voter base for the party and draw support.
