The CSR Journal Magazine

Chief Justice Bhushan R. Gavai on Monday recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor, as per the convention of seniority. The government is yet to issue an official notification, but it is expected that Justice Kant will assume office on November 24, 2025, and serve until February 9, 2027.

In the recommendation letter, Chief Justice Gavai described Justice Kant as “suited and competent in all aspects to take the helm.” He also noted that, like him, Justice Kant belongs to a section of society that has faced struggles at every step in life, which gives him faith that Justice Kant truly understands the pain and suffering of those who seek justice and protection of their rights.

The Journey of Justice Kant

Justice Kant was born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana. He completed his graduation from Government Post Graduate College, and in 1984, earned his law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.

He began his legal practice at the Hisar District Courts, and in 1985, moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Known for his sharp intellect and sound reasoning, he soon became one of the most respected lawyers in the region. He represented several high-profile cases involving universities, boards, and banks.

At just 38, he created history by being designated as a Senior Advocate. In January 2004, Justice Surya Kant was elevated to the Punjab and Haryana High Court bench, where he served for more than 14 years. In 2018, he became the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, and in 2019, he once again made history by being elevated to the Supreme Court of India.

Over the years, he has been part of several key verdicts, including the 2023 judgment upholding the abrogation of Article 370. Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.

A Historic First for Haryana

Justice Kant’s elevation to the highest judicial office of India marks a historic first for the state of Haryana, a proud milestone for its people. If the official announcement follows, Justice Kant will be appointed in accordance with the seniority-based tradition of succession.

The rise of Justice Kant from a small town like Hisar is not just a historical achievement but a testament to his perseverance, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice.
