Weather System Developing in Arabian Sea

The CSR Journal Magazine

A weather system over the southwest Arabian Sea is reportedly intensifying, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting that it may evolve into a depression within the next 24 hours. As of 5:30 am IST on October 19, 2026, the well-marked low-pressure area has been observed to persist in the same region after moving slowly eastwards, according to the IMD.

The system is anticipated to initially move east-northeast before gradually curving northwest towards the coast of Somalia over the next two to three days. Satellite imagery from INSAT-3DS has revealed extensive cloud formations over parts of the Arabian Sea and the adjacent equatorial region, with a swirling pattern evident in the southwest Arabian Sea.

This satellite data is crucial for meteorologists, as it aids in tracking cloud development and monitoring evolving weather systems over the ocean. The IMD continues to analyse these patterns to provide accurate forecasts for the region.

Expected Weather Conditions Over Arabian Sea

The IMD has issued warnings regarding squally weather conditions in the southwest Arabian Sea, predicting wind speeds of 35 to 45 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 55 kmph expected within the next 12 hours. Conditions are forecasted to become increasingly rough from the evening of October 19, with winds likely to reach speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, and gusts potentially hitting 60 kmph.

This period of rough weather is expected to persist until October 23, particularly affecting the southwest Arabian Sea and the coastal areas of northern Somalia and the Socotra Islands. The sea conditions are likely to remain rough to very rough during this time, which may pose challenges for fishing vessels and other maritime operations in the area.

The IMD has advised caution for those engaged in maritime activities, as the deteriorating conditions could lead to hazardous situations at sea. Mariners are urged to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions.

Impact on Indian Region and Future Monitoring

As the situation develops, the IMD will provide updates to ensure that the public and maritime stakeholders are informed about any changes in weather conditions. Continuous observation and analysis are essential to understanding the potential implications of this weather system.
