The Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur, Bihar, will be closed for three months starting on October 1 to facilitate the construction of a permanent steel truss bridge. This decision was confirmed by Engineer Kumar Shailendra, Minister of the Road Construction Department, on September 23, 2026. Previously, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary had announced this measure, but the onset of floods led to a postponement of the work.

Shailendra stated that the government had made the decision to proceed with repairs, which had been delayed earlier due to adverse weather conditions. The infrastructure work is crucial following the collapse of a slab on May 3, which necessitated halting traffic and redirecting routes.

Measures During the Closure

To mitigate the impact of the closure on commuters, arrangements have been implemented to ensure a smooth transition. Shailendra mentioned that the government would be operating twelve large vessels free of charge and around the clock. This service is designed to provide an alternative means of crossing the river during the bridge’s closure.

These measures aim to alleviate any inconvenience experienced by the public while the repairs are ongoing. The minister assured that the government is committed to preventing hardships for the residents who rely on this critical connection.

Additionally, the minister emphasised the importance of community engagement and awareness during this period, encouraging residents to make use of the alternate arrangements in place.

Expected Improvements Upon Completion

Once the construction is complete, the Vikramshila Setu is expected to showcase enhanced infrastructure, offering a revitalised appearance. The upgraded bridge will include newly constructed railings, an improved road surface, repaired expansion joints, and effective lighting. These enhancements are aimed at ensuring safer and more efficient passage for travelers.

The original structure, which has faced issues leading to its closure, serves as a vital link between Bhagalpur and the Seemanchal region across the Ganga River. Addressing the structural problems is anticipated to bolster connectivity for everyday commuters.

According to officials from the Border Roads Organisation, three temporary Bailey bridges were planned to restore connectivity while the repairs are underway. One of these bridges has already been launched, with work on the remaining structures currently in progress.

The construction of the permanent steel truss bridge intends to provide a long-term solution to the connectivity challenges faced by local residents and travellers alike. With proper planning and execution, the road ahead will enhance not only the infrastructure but also the safety and convenience for users of this important route.
