‘Rabies Raita’ in UP: 200 Villagers Rush for Anti-Rabies Injection After Dog Bite Kills Buffalo

The CSR Journal Magazine

Panic spread across Piprauli village in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district after residents discovered that a curd-based dish served at a funeral had been prepared using milk from a buffalo that later died of suspected rabies. The incident prompted nearly 200 villagers to seek precautionary anti-rabies vaccinations at a nearby health facility.

Incident Traced Back to December 23 Funeral

According to villagers, a funeral ceremony was held on December 23, during which raita was served to mourners. Days later, it came to light that the milk used in preparing the dish had been sourced from a buffalo that had been bitten by a dog earlier. The animal reportedly showed symptoms associated with rabies and died on December 26, triggering alarm among villagers who had consumed the food.

Villagers Rush for Preventive Vaccination

As news of the buffalo’s death spread, fear of possible infection gripped the village. By Saturday afternoon, large numbers of residents, including women and older people, gathered at the Ujhani Community Health Centre demanding immediate vaccination. Health officials said around 200 people were administered anti-rabies shots as a precautionary measure.

Health Officials Step In to Contain Panic

Chief Medical Officer Dr Rameshwar Mishra confirmed that authorities acted swiftly after receiving information about the suspected rabies case. He stated that while rabies transmission through boiled milk is highly unlikely, vaccination was offered to anyone with concerns. “Prevention is better than cure. Even though there is normally no risk after boiling milk, vaccines were given to rule out any potential danger,” he said.

“As a precautionary measure, villagers were advised to take anti-rabies vaccines. Prevention is always better than cure,” Mishra said, adding that all those who expressed concern were vaccinated.

Health Centres Kept Open, Village Under Watch

To manage the situation, both the primary health centre and the community health centre remained open through Saturday and Sunday to ensure uninterrupted vaccination. The health department confirmed that no cases of illness have been reported so far and that the situation remains under control. Medical teams have also been deployed to monitor the village and prevent rumours from fueling further panic.

Officials emphasized that the vaccination drive was purely precautionary. Villagers were advised to remain calm, and health authorities assured them that there was no evidence of disease spread in the area.
