Usernames Introduced on WhatsApp, CEO Kunal Shah Invites Users to Reserve Their Names

The CSR Journal Magazine

The introduction of usernames on WhatsApp represents a major shift in how individuals can initiate conversations on the platform. This feature allows users to connect with others by sharing a unique username rather than their mobile phone number. WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has formally announced the rollout of usernames, aimed at bolstering privacy while maintaining connectivity.

The announcement was made by Kunal Shah, the new CEO of WhatsApp, who emphasised the importance of this update for user privacy. As of June 29, 2026, WhatsApp began enabling users worldwide to reserve their usernames ahead of a broader launch later in the year. Users will receive notifications within the app as the feature becomes accessible in their regions.

Reasons Behind the Shift to Usernames

WhatsApp’s decision to implement usernames is primarily motivated by privacy considerations. In numerous scenarios, users may prefer to communicate without disclosing their personal phone numbers. This could apply to new acquaintances, such as colleagues, classmates, or parents within shared social groups.

With the introduction of usernames, users can now interact using a designated name, reducing the level of personal information shared. This change is not intended to mimic social media platforms; instead, WhatsApp aims to provide a privacy-centric means of communication. Importantly, a public directory of usernames will not be developed, and users will not receive suggestions for other usernames.

The ability to message another user will depend on knowing the exact username, establishing a foundational layer of privacy in interactions. Further enhancing this security, WhatsApp is also launching a feature called the Username Key, which allows users to create an additional layer of protection that must be supplied by new contacts before they can initiate messaging.

How to Reserve a WhatsApp Username

Users wishing to reserve their usernames can do so by following a straightforward process. First, they need to update their WhatsApp to the latest version. Next, they should navigate to Settings, tap on Account, and select Username. Finally, they can choose an available username and confirm their selection.

Businesses and organisations have the option to claim usernames that align with their existing accounts on Instagram or Facebook, wherever applicable. WhatsApp specifies that usernames may be up to 35 characters long and must adhere to specific naming criteria. Users will retain the ability to update, remove, or change their usernames at any time.

To minimise impersonation risks, usernames associated with well-known public figures and celebrities will be reserved. Additionally, existing chat functionalities will remain unchanged, allowing current contacts to message users as they have previously done. Features such as blocking, reporting, and end-to-end encryption will continue to function without modification.

Timeline for Feature Rollout

The rollout of the username feature will be executed gradually over the next few months. Not all users will gain immediate access. WhatsApp has indicated that in-app notifications will inform users when username reservations are available in their specific regions, while the comprehensive feature is set to be launched later in 2026.
