The US House of Representatives has voted for the third time to terminate the ongoing military engagement in Iran by endorsing a war powers resolution. The resolution argues for necessitating President Donald Trump to obtain congressional approval for any continued military operations. The measure garnered a vote of 220-204 late on Tuesday, receiving support from several Republicans alongside the majority of Democrats. However, previous resolutions have not progressed to the President’s desk, where Trump is expected to veto this initiative as well.

This latest vote is anticipated to be the final attempt by the House to address the Iran conflict before the forthcoming midterm elections. The war, initiated by Trump on February 28, has lasted nearly seven months, resulting in repeated missile strikes that have raised alarms over regional stability and significantly impacted fuel prices and inflation within the United States.

Representative Seth Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat and former Marine, underscored the necessity for congressional intervention, stating that it was time for the legislature to “actually ask tough questions” as mandated by the Constitution, rather than yielding to a seemingly belligerent administration.

Republican Concerns About Iran’s Threat

Republican Representative Brian Mast from Florida, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, raised concerns regarding the military resources that Democrats propose to withdraw from the area, asserting that Iran remains a significant threat. Mast argued that President Trump is committed to ending what he termed “forever wars,” which he argues have persisted for decades due to tensions with Iran. He stressed that Iran continues to pose an ongoing threat to the United States, and he expressed that the situation warrants a decisive stance.

As lawmakers prepare to return to their constituencies for campaigning, with less than 50 days remaining until the elections, the political landscape is fraught with discussions surrounding high prices for consumers. The ongoing conflict has disrupted oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, further exacerbating inflationary pressures.

The Congressional Budget Office reported on Tuesday that the war’s costs had exceeded $38 billion as of August 1, with projections estimating an additional burden of between $2 billion and $3 billion per month, contingent on the level of conflict intensity. This financial strain is contributing to an inflation increase of 0.5 percentage points more than previously anticipated, extending into 2027.

Political Implications Surrounding the Conflict

President Trump’s promise to avoid entanglements in foreign wars poses a challenge for the Republican Party, especially with the ongoing conflict in Iran impacting their political standing. A recent AP-NORC poll revealed that a majority of Americans consider the engagement in Iran to be unjustified. Legislative attempts to amend the direction of the war have faced considerable obstacles, particularly given Trump’s ability to veto any limiting measures.

The House had initially passed a war powers resolution in June and again in July, while the Senate witnessed a similar resolution pass after numerous attempts before Republican senators reversed their stance following criticism from Trump during a closed-door meeting. Under constitutional provisions, it falls within Congress’s authority to declare war, while the President, as Commander-in-Chief, can initiate certain military actions without prior approval.

House Speaker Mike Johnson noted on Tuesday the urgent need to reduce fuel prices but mentioned that the situation regarding Iran was evolving as allies began contributing to regional stability. He indicated that positive changes in gas prices may lead to a reduction in grocery costs, suggesting that such shifts are anticipated post-election.
