UP Man, 26, Killed in Riyadh Missile Attack Amid Escalating Regional Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

A pall of sorrow has enveloped Baghain village in the Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh after the death of 26-year-old Ravi Gopal. The young laborer was reportedly killed during a missile attack in Riyadh amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. His family is now facing challenges in bringing his body back to India, claiming that local authorities have not provided the necessary support.

Call with Wife Interrupted by Explosion

The incident occurred on the night of March 18. Ravi was conversing with his wife, Ritu, after completing his factory shift. The conversation, which began at approximately 8:20 PM, took a tragic turn when Ritu heard an explosion on the line at 9:53 PM. The call was abruptly disconnected, and Ritu’s subsequent attempts to reach him were unsuccessful. It was only the following day that the family learned of his death from a friend.

Details of Missile Attack Emerge

On March 18, Saudi Arabia reported that it had intercepted four Iranian ballistic missiles targeting the capital, Riyadh. Some debris from this attack reportedly fell near a refinery south of the city, and it is believed that Ravi’s death was caused by this falling debris. His family described him as the sole earner for their household, which includes his parents, wife, and a four-year-old son. Ravi had been working in Saudi Arabia since his marriage to Ritu in September 2020.

Lack of Support from Authorities

The family has expressed frustration over the lack of assistance from the Indian government in repatriating Ravi’s body. They have reported the incident to local police, who promised prompt action, but as of now, no progress has been made in bringing him home. The ongoing geopolitical tensions have heightened concerns for Indian citizens residing abroad.

Ongoing Impact of Middle East Conflict on Indian Nationals

The presence of numerous Indian expatriates in the Gulf states, many of whom work in sectors such as construction, healthcare, hospitality, and finance, has made the community particularly vulnerable in times of conflict. Reports indicate that six Indians have lost their lives amid recent hostilities in the region. Just days prior, two Indians were killed in a drone strike in Sohar, Oman, and another Indian national was fatally injured in Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia, due to an Iranian missile aimed at radar systems hitting a residential area.
