The city of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh achieved a milestone on September 18, 2026, by lighting 33.27 lakh diyas along the Kshipra River and at Mahakal Lok. This event was organised in conjunction with the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, which coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.

The simultaneous illumination was part of a larger initiative that saw a grand total of 3.55 crore diyas lit across 845 notable locations in the state. The significant participation highlighted the enthusiasm of the local community and various political figures in honouring the Prime Minister.

High-profile attendees included Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, state president Hemant Khandelwal, and Mahendra Singh, who lit an ‘Ashirwad Ka Diya’ at Ram Ghat, symbolising blessings and goodwill.

Events Across Ujjain and Madhya Pradesh

The lighting of diyas commenced precisely at 7 pm, announced by a ceremonial siren. More than 25,000 volunteers and residents gathered at various ghats along the Kshipra River, creating a spectacular display of lights. The main Deepotsav took place at sites such as Ram Ghat, Datt Akhara Ghat, Kedareshwar Ghat, Sunhari Ghat, and Bhukhi Mata Ghat.

In addition to the lighting ceremony, attendees participated in the Kshipra Aarti, offering prayers for the welfare and prosperity of the state’s populace. The event was designed not only as a celebration but also as a gesture of respect towards Prime Minister Modi, reflecting on his extensive 25 years of public service.

The event in Ujjain was part of a statewide celebration, encompassing significant locations across Madhya Pradesh, each contributing to the overall success of the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’.

Wide Participation Throughout the State

The campaign was not limited to just Ujjain but also included several other districts in Madhya Pradesh. Notable participation was recorded in Gwalior, Shivpuri, Guna, Ashoknagar, and Datia, among others, each contributing numerous diyas to the total count.

In Gwalior, eleven locations lit diyas, while Shivpuri, Guna, and Ashoknagar each hosted eleven sites dedicated to the initiative. The extensive reach of the programme emphasised community spirit and collective celebration.

Various other areas, such as Bhopal, Khandwa, and Betul, also engaged in this effort, allowing people from all walks of life to unite for a common cause. The widespread involvement demonstrated the effectiveness of community organisation in achieving a shared goal.

As a tribute to the Prime Minister’s contributions and dedication to the nation, the lighting of diyas across Madhya Pradesh serves as a reminder of the community’s spirit and the role of public figures in inspiring collective action.
