Thackeray Cousins Reunite Ahead of Mumbai Civic Polls, Reshaping Maharashtra Politics

The CSR Journal Magazine

After nearly two decades of political separation, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have come together, announcing a formal alliance between Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) ahead of Maharashtra’s local body elections, including the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls.

The announcement was made at a joint appearance in Mumbai, signalling a decisive shift in the state’s political landscape. Declaring the partnership, Raj Thackeray said, “I officially declare that Shiv Sena and MNS are alliance partners (for the January 15 election).” He followed it up with a bold assertion: “Mumbai will get a Marathi mayor.” Standing beside him, Uddhav Thackeray responded confidently, “Mumbai will stay with us, come what may.”

Thackeray Cousins End Rift

Earlier in the day, Uddhav, along with his wife Rashmi and son Aaditya, visited Raj Thackeray’s residence at Shivteerth in Shivaji Park. The cousins sought blessings from Raj’s mother, Kundatai, in a gesture that carried strong emotional and political symbolism, ending years of estrangement within the Thackeray family.

Emphasising unity, Uddhav stated, “We have come together to stay together,” while Raj underlined the larger goal, saying, “Maharashtra is more important than any dispute, difference.” Uddhav also extended an open invitation to disgruntled leaders, remarking, “Those who can’t bear to see what is happening within BJP can also come with Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS alliance.”

Marathi Identity Back in Focus

While seat-sharing specifics were not disclosed, party sources suggest a broad understanding has been reached for Mumbai and surrounding civic bodies. The alliance is being positioned as a revival of Balasaheb Thackeray’s legacy and a renewed push for Marathi identity in urban politics.

The reunion has unsettled the BJP-led Mahayuti, prompting internal discussions on counter-strategies. With Marathi-speaking voters forming a significant portion of Mumbai’s electorate, and the MNS having demonstrated influence across numerous wards, the combined Thackeray force is expected to pose a formidable challenge particularly to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

As civic elections draw closer, the Thackeray surname has returned to centre stage, this time united, reshaping the political contest for Mumbai’s future.
