Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday visited Dhaka University and offered prayers at the grave of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho, marking the third day of his return to Bangladesh after nearly 17 years abroad.
During his visit to the Dhaka University campus, Tarique Rahman also offered prayers at the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, situated beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque. Sharif Osman Hadi was laid to rest next to Nazrul Islam’s grave on December 20.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir reached the grave premises earlier and accompanied Tarique during the prayers.
Tight security during campus visit
According to party sources, Tarique Rahman left his Gulshan Avenue residence around 10:40 am in a white bulletproof SUV under tight security arrangements. He arrived at the Dhaka University campus at approximately 11:15 am. A significant security presence was deployed in and around the area throughout the visit.
After paying his respects, Tarique Rahman was scheduled to visit the Election Commission office to complete his National Identity Card (NID) registration and enlist himself as a voter. He was also expected to go to Mahbub Bhaban in Dhanmondi, the residence of his father-in-law, before visiting Evercare Hospital to see his ailing mother.
However, party sources confirmed that his proposed visit to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), popularly known as Pangu Hospital, to meet those injured during the July 2024 mass uprising was cancelled.
Background of Hadi
Sharif Osman Hadi, a student leader and a candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the head on December 12 while travelling in a rickshaw on Culvert Road in Puratan Paltan. The attack took place a day after the Election Commission announced February 12 as the date for the next national election.
He was initially taken to a hospital in Dhaka and later airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on the night of December 18. Hadi was widely regarded as a prominent figure in the July 2024 mass uprising and served as the spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho.
