Tamil Nadu Leads in Hiring Industry Experts for Higher Education Institutions

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tamil Nadu is at the forefront of hiring industry professionals as Professors of Practice (PoP) in higher education institutions, according to data released by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The state is closely followed by Maharashtra and Gujarat in efforts to incorporate seasoned industry leaders into academic settings. The PoP initiative, launched by the UGC in 2022, aims to bridge the divide between theoretical knowledge and practical industry demands by infusing real-world experience into universities and colleges.

Statistics on Appointments Across the Nation

Data from the UGC reveals that a total of 1,841 Professors of Practice have been appointed across 349 higher education institutions so far. Tamil Nadu leads the country with 395 appointments. Following Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra has made 193 appointments, while Gujarat and Karnataka have reported 179 and 170 appointments, respectively. This data indicates a growing awareness among educational institutions regarding the benefits that industry veterans can provide, especially in fields such as engineering, technology, entrepreneurship, and applied sciences.

Institutional Dynamics in Hiring

A closer examination of the types of institutions shows that the initiative is largely being driven by private and deemed-to-be universities. Deemed universities account for 699 appointments, while private universities have engaged 715 Professors of Practice. State universities have made 212 appointments, and colleges have brought on board approximately 200 professionals. In contrast, central universities have appointed a mere 15 Professors of Practice, despite the presence of 56 central universities within India’s extensive higher education landscape, which includes 460 state universities, 128 deemed institutions, 510 private universities, and more than 45,000 colleges.

Understanding the Professor of Practice Role

The role of Professor of Practice is designed as a temporary and non-regular position that does not replace existing faculty roles. Candidates are usually required to have at least 15 years of relevant professional experience, ideally in senior or leadership capacities. A senior official from the UGC noted that the initiative aims to attract distinguished experts who can help design industry-oriented courses, conduct collaborative research, and mentor students by providing practical insights. Typically, these appointments are limited to three years, with the possibility of a one-year extension in exceptional cases, ensuring that the total duration does not exceed four years. The initiative is also positioned as a chance for experienced professionals to give back to the education sector and contribute to nation-building in an honorary capacity, thus enhancing the connection between academic institutions and industry practices.
