The recent bilateral diving exercise, IN-SLN DIVEX 2026, marked an important reaffirmation of the maritime relationship between India and Sri Lanka. Conducted in Colombo from April 21 to 28, the fourth edition of this exercise involved significant operational collaboration between the two navies. The participation of the Indian Navy’s Diving Support and Submarine Rescue Vessel, INS Nireekshak, alongside diving teams from the Sri Lankan Navy, emphasised their commitment to enhancing joint capabilities and professional synergy.

According to statements from the Indian Navy, this specialised engagement focused on advanced underwater operations designed to promote interoperability between the two nations. The exercise comprised a series of complex deep-sea diving drills, including mixed gas diving evolutions that allowed divers to showcase their skills in both harbour and open-sea environments.

An essential aspect of the exercise included deep-sea dives off the coast of Colombo, specifically around World War-era wrecks, such as the SS Worcester and SS Perseus. With successful dives executed at depths exceeding 55 metres, both navies aimed to enhance their capabilities in underwater search, rescue, and salvage missions.

High-Profile Visits and Activities

In addition to operational training, the exercise included various joint activities aimed at fostering camaraderie. A notable initiative was a beach clean-up drive organised at Galle Face, complemented by friendly sports matches and yoga sessions, which further strengthened interpersonal relationships between the personnel of both navies.

The Commanding Officer of INS Nireekshak also commemorated the contributions of Indian soldiers who served in Sri Lanka by laying a wreath at the IPKF Memorial. This gesture served to honour the sacrifices made during the Indian Peace Keeping Force operations and highlighted the historical ties between the two nations.

Humanitarian Initiatives and Future Prospects

In a further demonstration of cooperative efforts, two BHISM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita and Maitri) cubes were delivered as part of India’s Aarogya Maitri initiative. This exchange aims to bolster disaster response and enhance medical preparedness within Sri Lanka, reflecting India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance.

Upon the conclusion of IN-SLN DIVEX 2026, INS Nireekshak received a ceremonial send-off, symbolising the strong bonds and continuing maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka. This exercise is considered a crucial step towards ongoing bilateral collaboration, aligned with the MAHASAGAR vision promoting security and growth across the regions.

The successful execution of this exercise not only demonstrates the operational readiness of both navies but also reinforces their shared commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region. As a result, both nations are likely to build on this engagement for future collaborative efforts, enhancing security frameworks in the maritime domain.

Wet-bulb temperature is defined as the lowest temperature that air can achieve when water is allowed to evaporate into it under constant pressure. This measurement is critical as it reflects how effectively the human body can cool itself through sweating. In drier conditions, sweat evaporates quickly, facilitating cooling. However, when the air is saturated with moisture, the evaporation process slows or halts, making it difficult for individuals to lower their body temperature.

Health Risks Associated with High Wet-Bulb Temperatures

The human body regulates temperature primarily through sweat. When wet-bulb temperatures approach 35°C, the body struggles to sweat effectively, resulting in a failure to cool regardless of fluid intake. This situation can lead to a rapid increase in internal body temperature, presenting serious health risks.

Extended exposure to wet-bulb temperatures exceeding 35°C can be life-threatening within hours. Inability to maintain a stable internal temperature may lead to conditions such as heatstroke or, in extreme cases, organ failure. Notably, even lower wet-bulb temperatures ranging from 29°C to 31°C are linked with a rise in mortality, marking it as a significant public health issue.

Heat-related illnesses are particularly concerning as they often go unrecognised until severe symptoms develop, necessitating urgent medical attention. This highlights the importance of monitoring wet-bulb temperatures to mitigate health risks.

India’s Vulnerability to Wet-Bulb Temperature Increases

India’s geographical and climatic conditions contribute significantly to its susceptibility to rising wet-bulb temperatures. Coastal areas experience high humidity levels, while densely built urban environments tend to trap heat effectively. The addition of monsoon moisture exacerbates these conditions, creating an intense atmosphere of heat and humidity.

This unique combination results in what experts refer to as a “lethal cocktail” of thermal discomfort. As global temperatures continue to rise, the frequency and severity of such conditions in India are projected to increase, further escalating the associated health risks.

The implications for outdoor workers, especially those without access to air conditioning, are pronounced. High wet-bulb temperatures can significantly limit outdoor activities, heightening health risks and reducing overall productivity. Awareness of these conditions becomes imperative as their prevalence increases with climate change.

Implications for Daily Life and Public Health

Rising wet-bulb temperatures affect daily life directly, particularly for populations engaged in outdoor work or living in environments lacking adequate cooling. Individuals exposed to extreme heat and humidity are at a greater risk of experiencing heat exhaustion, which can compromise health and well-being.

The cumulative stress on the body from high wet-bulb temperatures can lead to prolonged recovery periods. This necessitates that individuals remain informed about their local weather conditions and heed warnings pertaining to heat risks. Understanding wet-bulb temperature is essential for making informed decisions about outdoor activity.

As incidences of heatwaves become more prevalent in India, recognising the significance of wet-bulb temperature is vital. An informed populace that understands the risks associated with heat and humidity can take necessary precautions to safeguard health and well-being amidst increasingly extreme weather patterns.

This week, India is preparing for extreme heat, with forecasts indicating that temperatures could reach alarming levels across several states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a heatwave in various regions, primarily affecting eastern Uttar Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha, where thermometers are already approaching 40 to 45 degrees Celsius.

As temperatures soar, individuals are advised to take precautions against the oppressive heat, which feels particularly harsh due to high humidity levels. This combination can hinder the body’s natural cooling mechanisms, resulting in a heightened feeling of discomfort and danger.

A heatwave is categorised by the IMD as a rise in temperatures that exceeds normal levels by at least 4.5 degrees Celsius, and areas across the country are currently crossing this threshold. The harsh conditions are forcing people to shield themselves from the relentless sun as they brace for another punishing week.

Regions Most Affected by the Heat

The areas facing the most severe heat this week include Vidarbha in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Specific regions within these states are experiencing isolated temperatures that exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

The eastern coast, which encompasses Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, is also facing unique challenges due to a combination of high temperatures and humidity. This dual effect complicates the situation, making it difficult for residents to cope with the extreme weather.

Humidity can impede the body’s ability to regulate temperature effectively, leading to conditions that can pose health risks. Therefore, those residing in the affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during these severe weather conditions.

Limited Rainfall Expected

While isolated thunderstorms may develop in Punjab, northern Rajasthan, and western Haryana, substantial rain is not anticipated in Delhi or most of the northern plains. The prevailing weather conditions are expected to persist, leaving many areas unrelieved from the heat.

Conversely, southern India is predicted to experience some respite from the relentless heat. Intense thunderstorms are anticipated in southern Maharashtra, northern Karnataka, and Telangana over the next 72 hours, which could provide much-needed relief. Additionally, the northeast region will see scattered thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

Projected Duration of Heatwave

The IMD has indicated that the extreme heatwave conditions may continue until at least April 22. Specific regions, such as east Rajasthan and Odisha, are expected to remain exceptionally hot until that date as well, while Jharkhand is forecasted to see high temperatures persist until April 21.

Residents of east Uttar Pradesh may notice some cooling around April 20, while Vidarbha and central India might experience slight alleviation a bit earlier. However, no significant changes in temperature are expected for the plains in the next three to four days.

With no major weather systems anticipated in the coming days, millions across India are facing an extended period of extreme heat. Authorities encourage residents to stay indoors during peak hours, maintain hydration, and follow the IMD’s district-level alerts for their safety.

India has announced the delivery of 13 tonnes of Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccines to Afghanistan, aiming to bolster the country’s child immunisation efforts against tuberculosis. This shipment, which also includes necessary dry materials, was dispatched to the Ministry of Public Health in Afghanistan. The information was confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a statement on 14 April 2026.

In a communication on X, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the significance of this delivery. He stated that India is committed to aiding Afghanistan’s initiatives for enhancing child health and immunisation against tuberculosis. The support forms part of India’s ongoing humanitarian efforts to assist the Afghan population.

This action reflects India’s broader approach to providing essential medical supplies and vaccines to Afghanistan, which includes ongoing support following the recent earthquake that struck the region on 3 April 2026. The Indian government has been consistent in extending humanitarian assistance in various forms to address the critical needs of Afghan citizens.

Recent Humanitarian Aid Following Natural Disasters

In addition to the vaccine delivery, India has been actively responding to recent disasters in Afghanistan, including a severe earthquake and resultant floods. On 5 April 2026, the MEA announced the provision of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) materials, which included kitchen sets, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, and sleeping bags, among other supplies. This support follows the devastating impact of heavy rains and floods that reportedly destroyed 131 homes and partially damaged 650 others, as confirmed by the National Disaster Management Authority.

The initiative aims to alleviate the hardships faced by the affected families and communities, ensuring they receive the necessary aid during this challenging period. The Indian government emphasised its commitment to standing in solidarity with the Afghan people, highlighting its dedication to humanitarian assistance in response to crises.

Specifically, the floods have adversely impacted more than 3,000 jeribs of agricultural land, raising concerns about food security in the region. The Indian aid is intended to help mitigate these effects and support affected communities in rebuilding their lives.

Afghanistan’s Response to Sanctions and International Actions

In parallel to India’s humanitarian efforts, the Afghan government has voiced strong criticism of the United Nations’ sanctions regime, especially after recent updates to the sanctions list targeting senior leaders. Afghan spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid described these measures as “unreasonable and ineffective,” arguing that they fail to address the underlying issues while adversely affecting ordinary citizens.

Mujahid contended that the continuation of such sanctions indicates a failure in policy and assessment by international bodies. He expressed that these measures not only restrict individuals but also extend their impact to government institutions and society at large.

His comments were made following announcements from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which confirmed revisions to identifying details for several senior officials of the Taliban, including Mohammad Hassan Akhund and Abdul Ghani Baradar among others. The Afghan government is seeking a reassessment of the implications that these sanctions have on the Afghan populace, particularly in light of ongoing humanitarian challenges.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Krunal Pandya has affirmed that his primary ambition is to represent India in international cricket. Currently, he is dedicated to enhancing his on-field performance and contributing to his team’s successes, with the hope that these efforts will lead to opportunities at the national level. Pandya last donned the Indian jersey during the tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021, where he participated in the third ODI on July 20 and the second T20I five days later in Colombo. Since these matches, he has not had any further appearances for the national team.

Pandya’s Outlook on National Representation

Pandya expressed his perspective on national representation, stating, “The ultimate goal is to represent the country, and I don’t dwell too much on it. I want to keep doing what I have in my hand, which is to go out there and perform and win games. And in that process, if I get that opportunity, I’ll be really glad because that’s the ultimate goal, playing for the country.” He acknowledged his previous opportunities with the national team and expressed satisfaction with his contributions during that time, emphasizing his desire to continue focusing on his game while leaving the rest to fate.

International Career Statistics

Throughout his career, Krunal Pandya has participated in 5 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 19 T20 Internationals (T20Is) for India. Across these 24 matches, he has accumulated a total of 254 runs, while also securing 17 wickets. His performances in international formats have established him as a credible candidate for future selections.

Achievements in the Indian Premier League

Pandya has made significant contributions to the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he is viewed as a talented player. He has amassed 1757 runs across 146 matches in the IPL, maintaining an average of 21.96. In terms of bowling, he has claimed 98 wickets with an economic rate of 7.51, showcasing his dual capabilities as an all-rounder. His journey in the IPL began when he was acquired by Mumbai Indians in the 2016 auction for Rs 2 crore, quickly becoming an integral part of the team alongside notable players such as Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard.

Notable IPL Performances

In his debut season in 2016, Pandya scored 237 runs with an impressive strike rate of 191.12 and took six wickets. His pivotal role in the 2017 IPL final earned him the Player of the Match award for his composed innings of 47 runs from 38 balls, which proved crucial in a low-scoring game. The following season, he was re-signed for Rs 8.80 crore, continuing to be a backbone in Mumbai’s middle order during their consecutive title victories in 2019 and 2020. Notably, he played a key role by hitting the winning runs in the final against Delhi Capitals in 2020.

Recent Developments and Continued Success

After the introduction of two new teams in the IPL in 2022, Krunal returned to the auction process and was acquired by the Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 8.25 crore. He was instrumental in the team reaching the playoffs in both of their initial seasons. In 2025, he was once again in the spotlight after being picked up at an auction in Jeddah for Rs 5.75 crore, contributing to his team’s first IPL title. His performance in the IPL 2025 Final was particularly noteworthy as he received the Player of the Match award for his exceptional bowling figures of 4 overs, 17 runs, and 2 wickets against the Punjab Kings.

Large areas of India are predicted to experience a significant increase in temperatures starting Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The clearing of skies across many regions is expected to contribute to this warming trend, with conditions becoming increasingly conducive to higher daytime temperatures.

The IMD reported that much of northern, central, and western India is currently under predominantly cloud-free skies following the passage of recent weather disturbances. The absence of western disturbances or cyclonic influences has resulted in stable and dry atmospheric conditions across these areas.

IMD officials highlighted that maximum temperatures could rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next few days due to these factors. Areas such as Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, and parts of Madhya Pradesh could experience heatwave-like conditions as daylight temperatures increase.

Anticipated Temperature Trends in Major Cities

In New Delhi, temperatures are expected to steadily increase, with daytime highs projected to exceed 35 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Similar patterns of rising temperatures are also predicted for regions in the Indo-Gangetic plains, where the combined effects of dry winds and abundant sunlight will exacerbate the heat.

The role of cloud cover is significant in this warming phase. Clouds typically mitigate solar heating by reflecting a portion of sunlight back into space. With the current lack of cloud cover, more sunlight will directly hit the Earth’s surface, leading to faster heating during the daytime. Clear skies are also likely to result in cooler night temperatures, thereby increasing the overall temperature range between day and night.

While some isolated cloudiness or brief light rain may still occur in southern and northeastern parts of the country, these factors are not expected to notably affect the overarching trend of rising temperatures. Coastal areas might experience some cooling effects due to sea breezes; however, inland regions are anticipated to feel the full force of the increasing heat.

Public Health Advisory Amid Rising Temperatures

As temperatures rise, health officials have issued advisories for the public to take necessary precautions. People are encouraged to stay well-hydrated, limit time spent in direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and wear lightweight clothing to cope with the intensifying heat.

The IMD plans to keep a close watch on evolving weather conditions and may declare heatwave statuses if temperature thresholds are exceeded. This monitoring is crucial as the summer season progresses, making it important for residents throughout India to stay informed and prepare for hotter days ahead.

The current weather pattern marks the beginning of seasonal temperature increases, prompting both citizens and local authorities to take proactive measures against the rising heat. The IMD remains committed to providing ongoing updates to ensure public safety as summer progresses.

The United States has confirmed plans to host an Indian delegation in Washington, DC, later this month, marking a significant effort to strengthen bilateral trade relations. This announcement indicates a renewed focus on finalising a proposed trade agreement between the two countries. The information follows a productive meeting between US Ambassador Sergio Gor and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer focused on trade initiatives in South and Central Asia.

Ambassador Gor shared updates regarding this meeting on the X platform, emphasising its fruitful nature. He remarked on the ongoing commitment of both nations towards finalising a trade deal. Gor expressed optimism about the upcoming delegation visit, noting it as a key opportunity to advance trade priorities under President Biden’s administration.

Foreign Secretary’s Official Visit

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s upcoming three-day visit to the United States coincides with the delegation discussions, designed to fortify the strategic partnership between the two countries. During his visit, Misri will engage with senior US officials to evaluate and enhance bilateral relations, which encompass trade, defence, and technology sectors. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stated that this trip aims to reinforce cooperative ties across multiple domains.

Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra underscored the significance of the Foreign Secretary’s visit, viewing it as an occasion to comprehensively review the India-US partnership with American counterparts. He noted that the discussions will extend to vital areas such as trade, defence, technology, and addressing regional as well as global issues.

Additionally, the timing of these discussions coincides with recent geopolitical shifts, including a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran which has implications for international shipping and energy markets. Such developments are likely to feature in the broader context of India-US negotiations.

Recent Economic Engagements

The Washington talks are set against a backdrop of preliminary dialogues involving India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during the WTO ministerial meeting held in Yaounde. Both officials discussed the future of the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations while strategising on how to cultivate further economic synergies between the nations.

Despite announcements made in February regarding a preliminary framework, details of the proposed trade agreement remain unsigned. The forthcoming visit of the Indian delegation is seen as a crucial measure in advancing towards a formal conclusion of the trade pact.

The MEA has portrayed the Foreign Secretary’s visit as a natural extension of the diplomatic momentum generated during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s February trip to the US, illustrating the ongoing high-level interactions between the two nations.

In light of the escalating conflict in Iran, the Indian government has taken decisive measures to ensure the safety of its seafarers operating in the region. Officials have recommended that all Indian nationals working on vessels in the vicinity remain indoors and avoid high-risk areas. This advisory comes as tensions rise following military actions that have raised security concerns in maritime routes associated with Iran.

Operational Adjustments in Maritime Activities

As part of the safety protocols, Indian shipping companies have been instructed to reassess their operations within impacted waters. The Directorate General of Shipping has emphasized the importance of precautionary measures, urging companies to stay updated on the situation and to implement emergency plans should escalations occur. Regular communication with ships in vulnerable regions is advised to monitor developments and ensure crew safety.

Impact of the Conflict on Regional Shipping

The ongoing conflict in Iran has led to disruptions in vital shipping lanes that are critical for international trade. Shipping experts are closely watching the evolution of the situation, which has already caused some companies to reroute their vessels to avoid potential hazards. This adjustment could have significant implications for the maritime industry, impacting delivery schedules and increasing operational costs.

Government Coordination with Stakeholders

The Indian government is collaborating with various stakeholders, including maritime unions and shipping agencies, to provide resources and support to seafarers working in the region. The aim is to create a unified response that enhances the safety and security of Indians at sea. This cooperative effort includes sharing real-time information and updates regarding the safety of specific maritime routes.

Reassurance from Indian Authorities

Indian officials have reassured families of seafarers that their safety is a top priority. Continuous efforts will be made to monitor the situation while providing timely guidance to those in operational roles at sea. Families are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to report any concerns they may have regarding their loved ones.

Industry Response to the Conflict

Members of the shipping industry have expressed support for the government’s actions, acknowledging the need for enhanced safety protocols in light of the current environment. Industry representatives highlight the critical nature of these measures as they aim to protect those working in what are increasingly becoming dangerous conditions. The maritime industry is viewed as vital to India’s economy, and safeguarding its workforce is essential.

Continuous Monitoring and Future Preparedness

As the situation in Iran remains fluid, Indian officials stress the importance of continuous monitoring to quickly adjust safety protocols as necessary. Regular updates will be provided to all stakeholders to ensure that the protocols remain relevant and effective. Moving forward, the Indian government aims to be proactive in addressing emerging threats to maritime security in the region.

India has officially retracted its proposal to host the 33rd Conference of the Parties (COP33) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2028. Sources from the Environment Ministry reported that this decision was communicated to the Asia-Pacific group on April 2. The nation’s initiative to host COP33 was initially presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address at the High-Level Segment of COP28 in December 2023, held in the United Arab Emirates.

Background of the Proposal

During his address at COP28, Prime Minister Modi emphasized India’s commitment to the UN Framework for Climate Change, stating, “From this stage, I propose to host the COP33 Summit in India in 2028.” This statement underscored India’s intent to play a significant role in climate discussions on a global platform.

Political Reactions to the Withdrawal

The decision to withdraw has drawn criticism from Indian political figures. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed surprise at the government’s move, highlighting that the proposal was a key focus for the Prime Minister, especially with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2029. Ramesh suggested that hosting the summit could have positively impacted the political landscape.

Nationally Determined Contributions Under Review

In conjunction with the withdrawal of the COP33 proposal, the Union Cabinet recently approved India’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the 2031 to 2035 period. This move reflects a strengthened commitment under the Paris Agreement and aims to enhance India’s climate action efforts. The NDC showcases India’s ambition towards sustainable development and climate justice.

Vision for a Climate-Resilient Future

According to an official statement, the NDC for 2031 to 2035 is aligned with the vision of “Viksit Bharat,” which aims not only at milestones set for 2047 but also emphasizes immediate actions necessary for creating a prosperous and climate-resilient India for future generations. The government’s strategies for achieving climate goals involve embedding sustainability into daily life and governance, promoting climate-resilient development paths, and ensuring an inclusive transition for all segments of society.

India’s Track Record on Climate Action

The official release further stated that India’s climate goals build upon previous commitments, many of which have been met ahead of deadlines, highlighting the country’s consistent efforts in climate activism. The five qualitative targets set forth aim to integrate sustainability comprehensively within Indian governance and societal frameworks.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India announced on Monday that it has successfully facilitated the return of 1,777 Indian citizens from Iran, amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has now entered its second month. The successful evacuation was made possible through the support of authorities in Iran, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the media during an inter-ministerial briefing, highlighting the coordinated efforts of the Indian Embassy in Tehran in managing the evacuation.

Details of Evacuated Individuals

According to Jaiswal, the total number of evacuees includes 895 Indian students and 345 fishermen who were working in various capacities within Iran. The fishermen were evacuated via Armenia and arrived in India on April 4, landing in Chennai. Jaiswal also expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by Armenian officials in facilitating this process.

Gratitude Expressed for International Support

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar extended his gratitude to Ararat Mirzoyan, the Armenian Foreign Minister, for the cooperation in ensuring the safe return of Indian fishermen from Iran. In a statement on X, Jaishankar thanked the Government of Armenia for its role in the successful evacuation efforts.

Foreign Nationals Also Assisted

In addition to Indian nationals, the embassy was involved in the evacuation of two foreign nationals, one from Bangladesh and another from Sri Lanka. Out of the 1,777 evacuated individuals, 1,545 crossed into Armenia, while 234 were transferred to Azerbaijan as part of the overall evacuation operations.

Casualties During Ongoing Conflict

Addressing concerns regarding casualties, Jaiswal confirmed that eight Indian nationals have lost their lives amid the ongoing conflict, with one individual reported missing. The mortal remains of seven of the deceased have been successfully repatriated to India, while efforts continue to bring back the remains of the eighth individual, which are currently pending due to certain technical issues. The Indian Embassy in Oman is actively working on this matter.

Context of the Conflict in West Asia

The current conflict escalated significantly following military strikes conducted jointly by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28, which resulted in the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Tehran targeted US and Israeli assets across several Gulf nations, leading to significant disruptions in maritime traffic and posing risks to international energy markets and global economic stability.
