Seconds From Disaster: Speeding Car Smashes Into Restaurant in Bengaluru

The CSR Journal Magazine

What began as a normal Thursday night in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar nearly turned disastrous when a car went out of control on one of the area’s busiest roads. Just minutes before midnight, panic broke out on 100 Feet Road as a speeding vehicle crashed into a restaurant after jumping a road divider, missing pedestrians by a matter of seconds.

Dinner-Goers Narrowly Escape Crash

The accident happened at around 11.35 pm. CCTV footage from nearby cameras later revealed the sequence of events, showing how close the incident came to causing multiple deaths. A group of people who had stepped outside a restaurant after dinner were seen standing in the car’s path moments before the crash.

Police identified the driver as 42-year-old Derrick Tony, who was behind the wheel of a Skoda. He was travelling from 18th Main Road towards 100 Feet Road when he lost control. Officers said the car was being driven at a very high speed and that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Instead of slowing down at a left turn, the vehicle continued straight ahead. The car mounted the divider, struck a two-wheeler, and then hurtled into the outer wall of a Barbeque Nation outlet. The impact caused visible damage to the restaurant and brought the car to a halt.

Two-Wheeler Rider Injured

The rider of the two-wheeler, identified as Jabir Ahmed, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Those standing outside the restaurant escaped without harm, a detail many later described as sheer luck given the speed of the vehicle.

No fatalities were reported in the incident. Police said the situation could have been far worse had the car continued further into the crowded stretch.

A complaint was registered soon after the crash, and a case has been filed at the Jeevan Bheema Nagar Traffic Police Station. Authorities have said an investigation is ongoing to determine further action against the driver.
