Speculation Grows Over SAD-BJP Alliance Amid Amit Shah’s Comments

The CSR Journal Magazine

Speculation regarding a potential alliance between the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified on Friday. SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal indicated that his party is receptive to partnerships with organisations that align with its ideology and programmes. This statement came shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah suggested that an NDA government could emerge in Punjab by 2027.

Badal explicitly dismissed any possibility of collaboration with the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), labelling them as the “two biggest enemies of Punjab.” He emphasised that during the tenure of the SAD-BJP alliance, the state experienced peace and development across various sectors, including infrastructure and industry. He stated, “Whether we form the government or not, we will continue to fight for the people of Punjab.”

His remarks were made in the context of Shah’s prediction that the NDA would secure a victory in the upcoming assembly elections. Badal’s comments signal a willingness to explore alliances with other parties that share similar views, although he remains firm in his opposition to Congress and AAP.

Shah’s Predictions and BJP’s Position

Union Minister Amit Shah’s recent statements have reignited discussions about a potential reunion between the SAD and BJP. Shah asserted that the people of Punjab have decided in favour of an NDA government for the 2027 assembly elections, while also forecasting the decline of the ruling AAP in the polls. This has led to renewed speculation regarding the two parties possibly re-establishing their former alliance.

Despite the buzz, Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon clarified that no formal decisions regarding an alliance have been made. He stated, “We have nothing on an alliance as of now. We are prepared for all 117 seats and will contest on all of them.” Dhillon reiterated that the BJP considers its government at the Centre as an NDA government and plans to maintain that nomenclature in Punjab.

A senior functionary within the Punjab BJP noted that the political signals are evident, even though Shah did not specifically mention the Akali Dal. The functionary expressed that an announcement regarding an alliance should have been made sooner, considering the approaching elections. Any formal declaration would need to come from BJP national president Nitin Nabin.

Historical Context of SAD-BJP Relations

The SAD and BJP have a long-standing history as allies in Punjab, which lasted until September 2020 when the SAD ended their 24-year alliance over the controversial farm laws, which have since been repealed. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, an SAD MP and Sukhbir Singh Badal’s wife, previously served as a Cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi government before the split.

In the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, both parties faced limited success, with the BJP securing two seats and the SAD winning three in the 117-member Assembly. Recently, various leaders from the Punjab BJP have indicated that the party intends to contest all 117 assembly seats independently. Dhillon reaffirmed this stance, despite the renewed discussions about alliance possibilities.

Badal’s comments followed a meeting with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, where he led an SAD delegation. The delegation submitted a memorandum addressing the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa and called for measures including the dismissal of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Badal accused the AAP government of mismanaging Punjab’s affairs, claiming that the law and order situation has deteriorated under their governance. As the 2027 assembly elections approach, these public statements have rekindled the potential for a realignment between the former allies. However, neither party has yet confirmed a formal agreement, and the BJP’s leadership in Punjab continues to assert its readiness to contest all seats independently.
