Peaceful demonstrators gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) ongoing protest, which is demanding action regarding the NEET-UG paper leak allegations. Among the protesters were two specially-abled individuals, who communicated with media representatives using sign language, demonstrating their engagement in the movement.

A video circulating online, shared by independent journalist Mandar Gangrade, captured this moment as the participants, a man and a woman, interacted with journalists through sign language, smiling as they conveyed their messages. The footage highlighted their determination to participate in the protest despite any challenges they may face.

“Gleaning joy in their participation, Gangrade noted the enthusiasm visible among the youths at the protest, emphasising the empowering atmosphere fostered by the specially-abled individuals taking part,” he stated. The attention garnered by this displayed solidarity also prompted numerous positive comments on social media, with many users expressing admiration for the participants’ commitment.

Ongoing CJP Protest and Demands

The protest has gained momentum, being in its third consecutive day after the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march on July 20. Initiated on June 20, the agitation specifically calls for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, in light of alleged irregularities tied to various competitive examinations, including NEET.

In addition to demanding accountability for the NEET-UG paper leak, protesters are advocating for comprehensive reforms within the education system. They seek justice for families of students who reportedly died by suicide due to the associated stress and controversy surrounding these issues.

On July 20, as the demonstrators aimed to march towards Parliament, they faced a significant police response, which included baton charges and the use of tear gas. Human rights activists have raised concerns regarding the excessive use of force by Delhi Police during this incident, asserting that the actions taken were an overreach. Conversely, police officials maintain that measures were necessary to uphold security arrangements and prevent a breach of peace.

Activist’s Indefinite Hunger Strike

Among the prominent figures involved in the protest is activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been participating since June 28 and has undertaken an indefinite hunger strike in response to the ongoing situation. On July 23, he announced that he would end his fast if the government guaranteed that no punitive actions or FIRs would be initiated against students and young adults involved in the protest.

Wangchuk’s medical condition has led to his current admission at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, where he was transferred from Safdarjung Hospital following a directive from the Delhi High Court concerning his health. His decision to potentially conclude the hunger strike reflects ongoing discussions surrounding the protest’s impact and the need for a constructive dialogue between the government and the citizens.

As the protest continues to gain attention and support, both online and on the ground, the calls for change resonate deeply within the community, highlighting the pressing need for reforms in the Indian education system to avoid recurrences of such tragedies.
