The ongoing severe drought in Yavatmal district, particularly in Pusad tehsil, has escalated into a significant agricultural crisis. Farmers are expressing deep concerns as their soybean and cotton crops have been adversely impacted due to insufficient rainfall. This early onset of drought conditions in September has raised alarms regarding potential repercussions in the months ahead.

Manish Jadhav, a local farmer, noted the financial toll of three years of consecutive crop failures, stating that many farmers are now in dire straits. He emphasised the need for immediate support, requesting Rs 1 lakh per hectare without any restrictions, along with crop insurance benefits, given the extent of the damage to their livelihoods.

The dismal outlook mirrors the sentiments of other farmers, such as Durgadas Rathod, who expressed that the cultivation expenses have become unmanageable. Rathod recounted spending between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000 per acre on soybeans, only to face the possibility of not harvesting even a kilogram of produce this season. He raised concerns about meeting family expenses, including food, education, and livestock care, and called for compensation rather than mere assurances.

Wider Impact on Rural Livelihoods

The drought’s ramifications extend beyond the directly affected farmers to include seasonal agricultural workers reliant on farming for their income. As agricultural work dwindles, many families find themselves compelled to migrate to urban areas in search of job opportunities. Sachin Sakhre, another farmer, highlighted the plight of farm labourers whose livelihoods are in jeopardy because of the ongoing drought.

There is an increasing trend of rural families relocating to cities such as Pune and Mumbai, as well as industrial zones in western Maharashtra, due to the lack of local employment. This shift is indicative of a broader economic challenge, with farmers and labourers struggling to provide basic necessities for their families amidst deteriorating agricultural conditions.

Government Response to Drought Situation

In light of the severe drought conditions, the Maharashtra government has initiated measures to tackle the situation statewide. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced the formation of a Cabinet sub-committee, led by Chandrashekhar Bawankule, to deliberate on necessary relief actions.

The government plans to conduct crop-loss assessments, known as panchnamas, starting Wednesday in affected regions. This proactive approach aims to expedite assistance without waiting for federal support, focusing particularly on issues related to drinking water and livestock fodder, which have become pressing needs for the communities.

Officials have identified soybean, cotton, and maize as some of the most severely affected crops. The state is committed to planning interventions for the next seven to eight months, emphasising the urgency of addressing the challenges posed by the ongoing drought conditions in the region.
