Seven Indian Pilgrims Killed in Road Accident in Nepal, Several Injured

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a tragic incident, seven Indian pilgrims lost their lives in a road accident in Central Nepal, with five additional pilgrims currently receiving medical attention. The accident also left two Nepali nationals seriously injured. This unfortunate event occurred when a microbus returning from the Manakamana Temple crashed near Sahid Lakhan Rural Municipality-3 in the Gorkha district.

According to Bharat Bahadur BK, Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office in Gorkha, the microbus was carrying 14 passengers at the time of the accident. Seven of these passengers were confirmed dead at the scene. The victims included five men and two women, all hailing from India.

Seven other individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to the College of Medical Sciences located in Bharatpur, Chitwan, for treatment. Sudip Raj KC, Deputy Director at the medical facility, stated that nine injured individuals were brought in on the evening following the accident. Of those, five were reported to be in serious condition, with three admitted to the neurosurgery intensive care unit and two in the surgery intensive care unit, though not in critical condition.

Initial police investigations revealed that the microbus lost control and fell approximately 200 meters into a roadside slope. Remarkably, the only individuals not from India on board were the driver and co-driver. According to Santosh Gurung, a staff member of the vehicle who was in the front seat, the group had traveled from Kurintar (Chitwan) to the Manakamana temple, with delays during their pilgrimage. He noted the vehicle was reserved for an hour, but they stayed about four to five hours. Gurung reported that the brakes of the vehicle failed during their return journey, leading to the accident.

Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the crash site. Personnel from the Armed Police Force Nepal’s No. 29 Battalion, as well as local police, were involved in the rescue operation. The deceased are being sent to a hospital for post-mortem examinations, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.

The police have identified the deceased Indian nationals as Muthu Kumar (58), Anamalik (58), Meenakshi (59), Sivagami (53), Vijayal (57), Meena (58), and Tamilarsi (60). The injured passengers at Chitwan Medical College have been identified as Soranam (62), Mangada Jalam (65), Subhadra (75), Mayal (65), Saroja (73), Bhagyalakshmi (75), and Meenakshi (34). These developments highlight the ongoing risks associated with road travel in this region.
