SC Grants Bail to Imran Khan in Eight May 9 Cases, Questions Raised on Evidence

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan was granted bail by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in eight May 9 cases. The verdict was announced by a three-member bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi, along with Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Muhammad Shafi. Imran’s bail plea, related to multiple cases stemming from the May 9 riots, had earlier been rejected by the Lahore High Court in June.

Imran Questions Credibility of Police

Imran, who has been behind bars for two years, moved the SC arguing lack of evidence. His plea called the allegations baseless, noting that he was in NAB custody at the time of the riots, making his alleged involvement impossible. He pointed out contradictions in the prosecution’s statements, termed the police’s conduct “illegal and unethical,” and demanded a thorough investigation.

CJP Warns of Legal Repercussions

Prosecutor Zulfiqar Naqvi presented evidence against Imran, stating that three witnesses had testified, along with photogrammetric and voice-matching tests. He added that WhatsApp messages were also available and alleged Imran did not cooperate with the trial court-approved tests. CJP Afridi remarked, “There will be legal repercussions [for this]. Why are you saying all that is only going in your favour?”

Imran Named in Three Cases

PTI supremo Imran Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, countered that the challan indicated only three FIRs named Imran, not eight. He also stressed that any observations by the Supreme Court on the merits of the case could unfairly influence trial proceedings.
