Russian Drone Strike Devastates Indian Pharmaceutical Facility in Ukraine

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Sunday, a drone strike allegedly carried out by Russian forces hit an Indian pharmaceutical company located in Sumy, Ukraine. This incident resulted in the death of one employee and injuries to several others. The attack marks the second time the facility has been targeted, leading to significant operational setbacks for the company. Kusum Healthcare, the firm in question, has estimated the damages from this latest assault to exceed $50 million, approximately Rs 400 crore.

The company has been manufacturing medicines in Ukraine since 2009 and described the incident as a severe blow to its operations. In a statement, the firm condemned the strike as a direct assault on a private entity dedicated to producing life-saving medical supplies. Kusum claimed that the attack not only undermined its financial standing but also jeopardised its ability to provide essential medications to the local population.

Previous Incidents and Losses

Kusum has endured substantial losses previously, notably when a Russian drone destroyed its warehouse on April 14, 2025. That incident resulted in damages exceeding UAH 1 billion, more than Rs 250 crore. The latest drone strike has exacerbated the situation, with the company now facing another round of extensive financial repercussions. The firm characterised the recent drone strike as a “cruel repeat strike,” indicating the timing closely followed the anniversary of the earlier warehouse destruction.

The attack has left the high-tech manufacturing facility in a state of severe disrepair, complicating the company’s efforts to maintain its operations amidst the ongoing conflict. Kusum operates additional manufacturing units, including two in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, and one in Indore. The persistence of such incidents raises concerns about the company’s long-term viability in a region beset by war.

Concerns Over Govt Response

Kusum Healthcare expressed disappointment regarding the lack of support from the Government of India. The company indicated that it has made multiple requests for intervention through various Indian pharmaceutical forums aimed at securing diplomatic aid for private entities affected by the war. The firm accused Indian authorities of remaining silent despite its urgent appeals for assistance.

In its release, Kusum noted the stark absence of any statement from New Delhi expressing concern or offering aid to safeguard businesses involved in life-saving production amid conflict. Furthermore, Kusum highlighted the troubling reality of being a private healthcare provider entangled in a war zone, where the ramifications extend beyond financial losses, affecting the delivery of critical medical services to a vulnerable population.

Statements from the Ukraine Embassy

The Ukraine Embassy in India condemned the recent attack, labelling it as an indiscriminate act targeting a facility that does not serve military purposes. The embassy emphasised that the aggressor disregards the facility’s ownership by Indian nationals. In a statement shared on X, embassy representatives underscored the dissonance between the professed friendship between India and Russia and the harsh realities of ongoing warfare.

They described such actions as reflective of a broader pattern of aggression rather than any semblance of diplomatic goodwill. The incident stands as a stark reminder of the risks faced by civilian businesses in conflict zones and has raised questions about international diplomatic efforts to secure the safety of such enterprises in the region.
