Reviving the F1 Legacy: Can Formula 1 Return to India?

The CSR Journal Magazine

The journey of Formula 1 in India was brief yet impactful, spanning just three years from 2011 to 2013. During this period, the Buddh International Circuit became a noteworthy venue for motorsport enthusiasts, hosting exhilarating races and attracting significant crowds. However, the excitement was short-lived, as the Indian Grand Prix was discontinued due to various challenges. This weekend, the Delhi NCR region will witness a symbolic return to this era with the 2012 RB8 car, driven by Arvid Lindblad, revving its engine at the Red Bull Moto Jam event in Greater Noida. For spectators, this occasion will evoke memories of a time when Formula 1 races brought an electrifying atmosphere to the region.

Challenges That Led to the Discontinuation

The cessation of the Indian Grand Prix was driven more by financial and regulatory issues than by a lack of interest in motorsport. A classification disagreement arose, leading the Uttar Pradesh state government and central authorities to categorize Formula 1 as an entertainment event rather than a sport. This shift resulted in severe entertainment and luxury taxes that impacted the event’s profitability. Despite an investment exceeding USD 400 million by Jaypee Sports International to construct the circuit, the financial burdens became untenable. Additional customs duties on racing equipment further contributed to escalating expenses, ultimately leading to the race’s withdrawal in 2013 and leaving the Buddhist International Circuit devoid of activity.

Reflection on the Golden Era of Indian Motorsport

Karun Chandhok, one of the few Indian drivers who raced in Formula 1, reflects nostalgically on the peak period of Indian motorsport from 2009 to 2012. He recalls how the sport gained unprecedented media attention, with extensive coverage in publications that typically focused on cricket. The inaugural race in 2011 attracted around 95,000 fans, a figure that later declined but still remained notable in comparison to other international events. Chandhok emphasizes that while the seats at the 120,000-capacity venue seemed empty when attendance dipped, having 60,000 spectators at a sporting event in India is a significant achievement, showcasing an existing fan base eager for motorsport.

Requirements for a Successful Return of F1 to India

Chandhok, who now sits on the board at Silverstone, has identified several essential elements for making a Formula 1 return viable. Financial backing constitutes just one aspect; strategic value, fan engagement, and governmental support are equally crucial. He believes that India’s expanded fan base since 2013, demonstrated by attendance figures at international races involving Indian spectators, highlights the country’s potential. However, the governmental framework still poses significant challenges. Proper coordination on customs, visas, and tax classifications that hampered previous efforts is vital for any future plans. He anticipates that a long-term commitment will be necessary to establish F1 more sustainably in India.

The Bigger Picture for Indian Motorsport

Despite the appeal of hosting F1, Chandhok cautions against assuming that it would lead to an increased number of Indian drivers on the international stage. While racing events can inspire interest, grassroots development is crucial for nurturing future talent. Investment in a structured and ongoing talent development program is essential to cultivate capable drivers. Furthermore, amidst the cycle of sports viewership and sponsorship attraction, breaking into the mainstream sports milieu, where cricket currently dominates, will require comprehensive support from the government, corporate entities, and the motorsport community. Although demand persists and the infrastructure remains, without addressing the underlying issues, the revival of Formula 1 in India may face similar obstacles as in the past.
