Dhurandhar actor Ranveer Singh has invited legal trouble, an FIR has been lodged against him in Bengaluru for mocking while mimicking the Daiva ritual sequence from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1 – A Legend at the IFFI (International Film Festival of India) in Goa on November 28, last year. Upon the court’s directive a formal complaint was filed on Wednesday at High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru. The complainant of the case is an advocate Prashanth Methal from Bengaluru. In the complaint, Methal has accused Ranveer Singh of making derogatory comments and gestures on Chavundi Daiva, a tradition of coastal Karnataka, and this has hurt Hindu religious sentiments. Ranveer Singh booked under Sections 196, 299 and 302 of the BNS.
What does the FIR against Ranveer Singh say?
In the FIR, advocate Methal stated that Singh engaged in a stage performance in IFFI Goa that mocked the sacred Daiva traditions. He performed the Daiva act in a “crass, humorous, and disparaging” manner. There is a special mention of his expression while mimicking Panjurli and Guliga Daiva during the act in Goa. Advocate Methal said that Ranveer Singh also referred to Chavundi Daiva as a ‘female ghost’, which distorts the spiritual and cultural significance of the deity.
In the complaint, advocate Methal wrote that Chavundi Daiva is worshiped as a guardian deity and across the coastal districts of Karnataka, Daiva is represented as a divine feminine energy. And interpreting deity as ghost would lead to serious misrepresentation, and it has hurt religious sentiments. Acs per the FIR, Ranveer’s act has diminished the sanctity of a ritual that holds immense cultural and spiritual significance for many in South.
