Rahul Dravid Highlights Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Potential for Test Cricket

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rahul Dravid has expressed his belief that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could significantly contribute to the future of Test cricket. The former captain of India emphasised the necessity of managing the 15-year-old cricketer’s development as he embarks on this new phase in red-ball cricket. Sooryavanshi is poised to play for the East Zone in the Duleep Trophy, presenting him with a vital opportunity to establish consistency in the longer format following his impressive performances in white-ball cricket.

Dravid, who coached Sooryavanshi during the IPL 2025 season at Rajasthan Royals, noted that achieving a balance between formats could ultimately be key to the teenager’s evolution into an all-format player. “If he continues to perform well in red-ball cricket like he has in white-ball formats, it could be beneficial for not just him, but for the sport globally,” Dravid indicated in an interview with Cricinfo.

Challenges Ahead as Sooryavanshi Transitions to Red-Ball Format

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has played only eight first-class matches, boasting an average of 17.25. His lack of regular appearances has hindered the continuity that typically arises from sustained participation in domestic red-ball cricket. The Duleep Trophy is expected to provide him with a platform to adapt and grow in this format. Additionally, he may have further opportunities when India A competes against Australia A in two unofficial Tests scheduled for September.

Dravid highlighted the importance of allowing Sooryavanshi to gain experience in red-ball cricket, rather than rushing him into the fast-paced environment of T20 competitions. “It’s crucial to find that balance. While playing white-ball cricket in the IPL is advantageous, he must also have ample opportunities to cultivate his skills in the Indian domestic red-ball circuit,” Dravid stated.

However, the transition from T20 to first-class cricket will present unique challenges. Sooryavanshi has previously displayed his ability to excel against bowlers with aggressive stroke play, but the first-class game will require a different approach, including the capacity to build innings and withstand pressure over extended periods. “He will need time and the chance to gain a wealth of experience in red-ball cricket,” Dravid remarked.

Broader Implications for Test Cricket and Young Players

According to Dravid, Sooryavanshi’s development in red-ball cricket holds significance beyond his individual prospects. The landscape of cricket is changing, with Test cricket vying for players’ attention amidst the global rise of T20 leagues. Therefore, nurturing young talent capable of excelling in all three formats is becoming increasingly essential.

<h4″We all want to see Test cricket prosper, and we require players like Sooryavanshi who can engage with all formats of the game,” Dravid articulated. He considers Sooryavanshi’s choice to immerse himself in the Indian domestic red-ball system rather than participating in international T20 competitions as a pivotal step in his evolution.

Dravid acknowledged that the path forward will not be without obstacles. “He is likely to face some successes as well as challenging periods. Yet, it is important to recognise that he’s only 15 and has a long journey ahead,” he added. Currently, Sooryavanshi’s immediate focus is to perform well in the Duleep Trophy and to gain valuable experience.

While an India Test career may be a remote possibility at this stage, the groundwork is being set through his participation in domestic cricket. If Sooryavanshi successfully transitions from being a teenage sensation in T20s to a red-ball player for India, Dravid believes it could mark a significant development for the future of Test cricket during a time when such talents are essential.
