Qantas Announces World’s Longest Direct Flights from Sydney to London, New York

The CSR Journal Magazine

Qantas Airways is set to introduce the world’s longest non-stop flights under its Project Sunrise initiative, connecting Sydney to both London and New York. With distances exceeding 10,000 miles, these flights will enable passengers to make the journey without any layovers, marking a significant advancement in long-haul travel. The airline plans to commence operations in the first half of 2027 using Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft specifically modified for ultra-long-range travel.

The anticipated flight durations are approximately 22 hours, during which travelers will experience the unique phenomenon of witnessing two sunrises. By pursuing these ultra-long flights, Qantas aims to eliminate the need for traditional stopovers for refueling, thus reducing travel time by up to four hours compared to current flight options.

Easing Long-Distance Travel from Australia

The new routes will cover a distance of 10,573 miles to London and 10,100 miles to New York. Currently, these journeys mandate at least one stop, making this development a transformative step in how travelers fly between Australia and major cities in Europe and North America. Qantas has described this initiative as a solution to the long-standing challenges associated with the vast distances involved in such travel.

Vanessa Hudson, CEO of Qantas Group, highlighted that the project aims to mitigate the “tyranny of distance” that has historically impacted travel accessibility from Australia. The unveiling of Project Sunrise occurred at an event in September 2024 at Los Angeles International Airport, where Hudson expressed her optimism regarding the potential changes in passenger experiences on ultra-long flights.

Aircraft Specifications and Design Innovations

The aircraft designated for these flights, the Airbus A350-1000ULR, was chosen following an order for 12 modified planes placed by Qantas in May 2022. Equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent engines and a supplemental 20,000-litre fuel tank, these aircraft can achieve significantly greater ranges than their standard counterparts. The first delivery is expected in late 2026, with preliminary test flights slated to occur between Australia and New Zealand.

Passengers will be accommodated in a reconfigured layout with a lower density than typical A350 models. The cabin will feature 238 seats, including six First-Class suites, 52 Business suites, 40 Premium Economy seats, and 140 Economy seats. High-speed Wi-Fi will be available at no additional charge, and the spacious seating arrangement aims to enhance comfort for travelers on what will be among the longest flights ever operated.

Wellness Features and Jet Lag Mitigation Strategies

A prominent feature of the A350-1000ULR will be a designated wellness zone, which is designed to alleviate the physical consequences of prolonged air travel. This area will provide self-serve healthy refreshments, stretching spaces, and guided exercise routines, contributing to passenger well-being during the lengthy flight.

In collaboration with the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney, Qantas has implemented various strategies aimed at reducing fatigue and jet lag. These include tailored cabin lighting patterns and meal timings synchronized with passengers’ natural body rhythms, facilitating a smoother transition across time zones.

Advancements in Aviation Travel

Project Sunrise indicates a significant leap forward from historical travel methods that required multiple stops over several days between Australia and Europe. In the past, the route known as the “Kangaroo Route” necessitated stops in multiple cities and could take several days to complete. The upcoming flights, in contrast, promise to achieve these distances in a single, continuous journey, potentially revolutionizing international air travel.

If successful, Qantas’s new non-stop services could become a benchmark for ultra-long-haul travel, encouraging further innovations in aircraft design and layout aimed at enhancing passenger comfort on long flights in the future.
