PM Modi Slams TMC Over Malda Incident, Raises ‘Jungle Raj’ in West Bengal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of promoting a “jungle raj” in West Bengal, particularly referencing the recent gherao incident in Malda. During a rally in Cooch Behar held for the upcoming assembly elections, he expressed grave concerns regarding the safety of judicial officers and the constitutional process in the state. The Prime Minister’s comments come in light of the alleged hostage situation involving seven judicial officers, three of whom were women, during the incident in Malda.

Modi stated that the event is a reflection of the TMC’s governance, questioning how citizens can expect safety when even judicial authorities are not secure. His remarks insinuated that the TMC disregards constitutional institutions, calling the situation a stunning display of government overreach and arrogance. He further asserted that the happenings in Malda exemplify a broader pattern of lawlessness under the TMC regime.

The Prime Minister’s speech articulated a dire warning about the broader implications for the common people of West Bengal, positioning the state’s safety and lawfulness under severe threat from TMC’s actions. Modi remarked that if judges are unsafe, the general populace cannot possibly be safe.

Criticism of TMC’s Manifesto and Its Historical Context

During the rally, PM Modi also directed his criticisms towards the TMC’s manifesto, which he referred to as “ishtehar.” He drew historical parallels to the ‘Red Ishtehar’ issued in 1905, arguing that it led to violence against Hindus. By referencing this historical document, Modi suggested that TMC’s choice of terminology reflects an insidious agenda of appeasement that threatens Bengal’s cultural identity.

He conveyed discontent with the language choice in the TMC manifesto, indicating that the absence of Bengali terminology suggests an attempt to alter the state’s identity. The Prime Minister’s comments were aimed at highlighting a perceived erosion of Bengal’s rich heritage, warning attendees of a conspiratorial endeavour to erase the state’s honour.

Modi’s allegations emphasised the gravity of the TMC’s political strategies, which he claimed are designed to instigate unrest. He delineated the supposed implications of such a manipulative agenda, articulating a call for residents to reject what he viewed as an ongoing assault on their cultural identity.

Political Tensions Escalate Ahead of Elections

The political landscape in West Bengal has intensified in the wake of the Malda incident. Following the gherao event, which involved both local and judicial authorities being cornered, tensions have escalated. The PM’s remarks have resonated within a heated political environment where accusations are rampant between the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has countered Modi’s criticisms by alleging that the BJP is inciting violence in Malda. Banerjee contends that the party’s actions are geared towards creating unrest with the aim of overtaking the state’s governance. The CM’s statements included allegations of the BJP bringing in outsiders to provoke disturbances, which she claims is part of a broader strategy to disrupt the electoral process.

The state assembly elections, featuring a total of two phases on April 23 and April 29, have become a focal point for both major political parties. The results will be announced on May 4. The potential implications of the Malda gherao incident may have lasting echoes through the electorate as West Bengal navigates this pivotal moment in its political history.
