Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the surgical strikes conducted in 2016 represent a pivotal moment in India’s response to terrorism. In his monthly address, Mann Ki Baat, he emphasised that these strikes established a new benchmark in the nation’s counter-terrorism strategies. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to a zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism, asserting that the country stands ready to effectively counter any attacks.

The surgical strikes took place on September 28-29, 2016, following a terrorist assault at an army camp in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 18 soldiers. During his address, PM Modi described this operation as a “major historic achievement” for the country, highlighting its strategic significance in India’s security policy.

Modi mentioned that over the past decade, India has consistently responded to terrorist threats with decisive actions, citing examples such as the Balakot airstrike and Operation Sindoor. He stressed that the nation has communicated clearly to terrorist groups that any attempts to undermine India’s security would be met with a strong response.

Addressing Drug Abuse and Honouring Legacy

In addition to discussing counter-terrorism, PM Modi voiced concerns about substance abuse among youths in India. He acknowledged a recent commitment made by millions of young people against drug use, which is part of the Nasha Mukt Yuva Abhiyan, or the Drug-free campaign for youth. The Prime Minister expressed his delight at the proactive involvement of young individuals in advocating for a drug-free lifestyle.

During the broadcast, Modi also paid tribute to Ashok Singhal, leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, on the centenary of his birth. He remarked that Singhal’s contributions to social justice and inequality had often been overlooked, while also recognising his pivotal role in the Ram Mandir movement. The Prime Minister emphasised the need to remember diverse aspects of individual legacies in history.

Moreover, PM Modi referred to the inaugural Somnath Swabhiman Parv, mentioning the historical significance of the Somnath temple and its resilience against past invasions. He recounted that the temple was initially destroyed in 1026 by Mahmud of Ghazni, a point he underscored to honour India’s cultural heritage. The celebrations marked the pride associated with India’s historical identity.

Commemorating Global Tragedies and Promoting Cleanliness

Reflecting on international events, Prime Minister Modi commemorated the forthcoming 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the United States. He noted that Indians constituted the largest group of victims after Americans during this tragedy. Modi recounted his visit to the US in 2014, where he paid homage to the lives lost and extended condolences to affected families on behalf of the Indian populace.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the inspirational cleanliness initiatives undertaken by young people across India. He highlighted various local efforts, including youth-led initiatives to clean rivers in Madhya Pradesh and restore old stepwells in Andhra Pradesh, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship. In Mumbai, community groups are actively involved in maintaining beaches as part of ongoing efforts to promote cleanliness.

In anticipation of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2, Modi reiterated the importance of cleanliness, a principle famously championed by Gandhi. He shared observations of grassroots movements focused on waste segregation and cleanliness, underscoring the collective responsibility of citizens to enhance their surroundings and uphold hygienic standards.
