A petition seeking a ban on the release of Akshay Kumar-starrer Jolly LLB 3 stating the film mocks the legal profession, has been dismissed by the Allahabad High Court.
Three trailers and teasers scrutinized
A Division Bench consisting of Justice Sangeeta Chandra and Justice Brij Raj Singh thoroughly examined all three trailers and teasers of the upcoming film and found that there wasn’t any kind of objectionable content.
The Court ruled on September 2, “We have also gone through the lyrics of the song ‘Bhai Vakeel Hai’ and we do not find anything which may interfere in the practice of the legal profession by genuine Advocates.”
Legal profession in a derogatory light
Petitioner in this case, Jay Vardhan Shukla, contended that the Akshay Kumar-starrer movie is portraying the legal profession in a derogatory light. He even argued that the song featured in the trailer is influencing the minds of practicing advocates and defaming the image of the judiciary. Shukla said, “The derogatory portrayal in the Jolly LLB series discourages persons from joining the legal profession and creates disillusionment among law students, thereby affecting the future of the justice delivery system.”
Maintainability questioned
Questioning the maintainability of the plea, Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey pointed out that the petitioner hasn’t approached the competent authority regarding the film. Under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, if someone is aggrieved by any virtual content, they must first raise their grievance with the publisher.
Petition in Pune Civil Court
In a similar case filed in Pune Civil Court, actors Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi were summoned over a petition against their upcoming film Jolly LLB 3, slated for release on September 19.
Even in that petition, advocates Wajed Khan (Bidkar) and Ganesh Mhaskhe had pointed out that the teaser depicts the judiciary in a bad light.
