Peepal Tree Marries Banyan! Uttarakhand Village Hosts Full-Fledged Tree Wedding with Vedic Rituals

The CSR Journal Magazine

A rare and symbolic event unfolded in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, where a Peepal (Ficus religiosa) and a Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) tree were ceremoniously married according to Vedic customs. The wedding, which followed traditional rituals, was held in the Sanoli village of Lamgara block with full participation from local residents.

Trees Decorated as Bride and Groom Amid Vedic Chanting

The Peepal tree was adorned as the groom, while the Banyan tree was decorated as the bride. Traditional wedding rituals including Haldi and Mehendi ceremonies, Samdhi Milan, and the exchange of garlands (Jaimala) were observed prior to the symbolic marriage rites. Local priests Devi Dutt Joshi and Girish Chandra Joshi conducted the ceremony, complete with Vedic chanting and sacred rounds (pheras) around a ceremonial fire.

The celebration echoed with the sounds of traditional musical instruments such as dhol and damaun, creating the ambiance of a typical Uttarakhandi wedding. Community members, young and old, dressed in festive attire and participated in the wedding procession and rituals.

Trees Planted on Harela Festival Now Celebrated for 15-Year Milestone

The two trees were planted by Kalā Bisht, a teacher at the Sanoli Primary School, during the Harela festival in 2011. Marking fifteen years since their plantation, villagers decided to solemnise their bond through a traditional ‘Harishankari Vivaah’, a ritual symbolising unity between Peepal, Banyan, and Neem trees – all held sacred in Indian tradition.

Village residents Bahadur Singh and Champa Devi performed the role of the bride’s family during the ceremony, while Pan Singh and Shanti Devi represented the groom’s side. Rose petals were showered after the completion of the marriage rituals, observed by local residents and schoolchildren.

Traditional Dance and Uttarakhandi Cuisine Mark the Festivities

Adding to the festive spirit, community performances such as Chhaliya dance and Jhora folk songs were staged during the event. Guests took part in the celebrations by dancing to both traditional and modern music, including tunes played on the DJ system. A community feast was arranged with local delicacies like puri, rice, and raita served to attendees.

Ceremony Held to Promote Environmental Awareness and Cultural Values

The villagers described the event as a gesture to strengthen cultural traditions and raise awareness about environmental conservation. Local resident Bimla Bisht said such events create connections between the younger generation and nature. Others involved in the event echoed the view that symbolic rituals like these spread awareness about the importance of trees and promote responsibility toward protecting the natural environment.

The ceremony highlighted a growing community initiative in the region to use traditional culture as a medium for strengthening environmental values, while preserving age-old customs.
