The recent ferry disaster off the coast of northern Cyprus has resulted in at least eight fatalities, with 18 individuals reported missing. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when a ferry carrying 267 passengers and crew capsized shortly after departing from Kyrenia for Tasucu in Turkiye. Accounts from survivors detail moments of intense panic as the vessel began taking on water due to reported loud noises from below decks.

Survivors who managed to escape have recounted harrowing experiences as they witnessed fellow passengers struggling in the water approximately 7.5 kilometres from the Cypriot coast. An investigation has been initiated by local authorities, with all eight crew members of the ferry taken into custody for questioning. Eyewitnesses narrate scenes of chaos that unfolded aboard the vessel prior to its capsizing.

One survivor, Serkan Kunduraci, described a desperate situation, noting that some individuals were unable to swim or find life jackets. The captain allegedly attempted to steer the ferry back to Kyrenia, known as Girne in Turkish, but by this time panic had overtaken the passengers. Kunduraci’s account highlights the overwhelming distress, with many trapped behind others unable to escape the sinking vessel.

Survivor Accounts of the Chaos

Amid the crisis, another survivor, Deniz Ozpolat, articulated the sense of disorder among the passengers. He reported that as people rushed towards the exit, a crush developed, complicating their escape. He stated, “We couldn’t find the life jackets. They shut the doors on us and we couldn’t get out.” Eventually, passengers were able to open the doors and jumped into the sea as the ship began to sink under its own weight.

In the aftermath, another individual, Muhammed Ozcelik, who operates a water sports company, became one of the first responders at the scene. He mentioned that his boat was quickly deployed to rescue those in distress. Although he endeavoured to assist many, he noted that his boat exceeded its capacity as people fought to save themselves. Eyewitness reports indicate that some passengers were seen in life vests atop the overturned ferry, awaiting rescue.

Images broadcast by Turkish media depicted the gravity of the situation, showing survivors on small boats being assisted at a nearby port. Rescued individuals displayed visible signs of distress, and the incident remains a poignant reminder of the risks associated with maritime travel in the region.

Government Response and Investigation

Unal Ustel, the Prime Minister of northern Cyprus, addressed the tragedy late on Sunday, emphasising that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing. Ustel expressed a commitment to uncovering any negligence that may have contributed to the disaster, stating that those found responsible would face consequences. He has also indicated that considerable support is being provided by the Turkish coast guard and military in assisting local rescue teams.

This maritime catastrophe has been labelled as the most significant of its kind in the history of Cyprus, a nation that has experienced division along ethnic lines since 1974. Turkish Cypriots declared independence in 1983, a status recognised solely by Turkiye. As the search continues for the missing individuals, many survivors remain traumatized by their experiences, reflecting the profound impact of this tragic event.

The tragedy not only highlights the dangers present in maritime ventures but also serves to strengthen calls for enhanced safety regulations and protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
