Pakistan Extends Airspace Ban on Indian Aircraft Till September 23

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) announced on Wednesday that it will further extend the airspace ban on Indian aircraft till September 23.In the latest NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), a one-month extension has been announced that covers both military as well as civilian aircraft that are Indian-owned, operated, or leased.

The authority said, “All aircraft operated by Indian airlines will not be allowed to use Pakistani airspace. The ban also remains in place for military and civilian aircraft that are Indian-owned or leased.”

Daily flights affected

The first airspace closure was imposed on April 23, just after the Pahalgam terror attack in J&K, which killed 26 Indian civilians. On April 30, India announced a reciprocal airspace closure for all Pakistani aircraft. The ban was extended on May 23, then again in July, and lasted until August 24, before being extended again—affecting daily flights.

Pakistan Loses Rs 1,240 Crore

According to Dawn’s report, the airspace closure has adversely affected Pakistan’s aviation sector, with Pakistan Airports Authority losing over Rs 1,240 crore due to the two-month ban. Overflight traffic has reduced by 20%, with losses stemming from the ban on nearly 100–150 Indian aircraft flying daily.

Increased operation cost for Pak

Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif admitted the ban has caused heavy revenue losses. “The closure has impacted our overflying charges and transit traffic severely,” he said, adding that longer flight routes have increased fuel burn, crew rotations, and operational costs.

Meanwhile Indian airspace continues to operate normally on international routes, while Pakistani airlines remain barred from entering Indian airspace. The Minister of State for Civil Aviation has confirmed that the NOTAM restricting Pakistani aircraft has been extended until August 23.
