Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has raised alarms regarding a significant decline in the elephant population in India, stating that the reported 18 per cent reduction in numbers is a critical “wake-up call” for the government. Chidambaram made these remarks on September 22, 2026, via his social media platform X, emphasising the urgent need for attention to the issue.

The source of concern is a survey conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), which revealed that India’s elephant numbers fell to 22,446, a decrease of 18 per cent compared to figures from 2017. Chidambaram’s reference to a report by The Economist underscores the seriousness of the situation, urging the government to address this alarming trend.

In drawing attention to the discrepancies between the cultural reverence for elephants and the ongoing issue of poaching, Chidambaram noted, “We celebrate Ganesh Puja. Admirable. Notably, the Prime Minister highlighted Assam’s crucial role in rhino conservation, indicating that nearly 80 per cent of the world’s rhino population is now found in the state. He acknowledged Kaziranga’s successful measures in combating rhino poaching as a model for global conservation practices.
