The Opposition has strongly condemned the proposal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for establishing fast-track courts to address paper leaks in examinations. Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram has described the initiative as too little, too late, questioning the government’s strategy for preventing incidents of leaks rather than only reacting to them. He emphasized that punitive measures do not tackle the underlying issues causing these leaks.

Chidambaram expressed his concerns in a statement to ANI, asserting that the government has not clarified how it intends to prevent systematic leaks of examination materials. He stated that the government’s response, which focuses on post-fact measures, fails to halt the leaks before they occur.

He highlighted the presence of vulnerabilities within the examination paper supply chain, urging the government to take steps to fortify this system and ensure its integrity. “What is the government doing to correct those vulnerabilities?” Chidambaram asked, stressing the necessity for stronger protections against future occurrences.

Criticism of Current Educational Leadership

Chidambaram also raised questions about the concentration of power in the education sector, citing the instance of one individual, Vineet Joshi, holding multiple significant roles, including Secretary of Higher Education and acting chairman of various educational bodies. Such a situation, he argued, could contribute to systemic deficiencies in the educational landscape.

He called for accountability and suggested that the Education Minister should face consequences, stating, “The Minister should either resign or be reassigned to a different ministry.” His comments reflect a broader call for transparency and responsibility within the education administration.

Further backlash came from Congress MP KC Venugopal, who reiterated demands for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He articulated the growing dissatisfaction among students and the Opposition regarding the government’s handling of examination integrity and related issues.

Ongoing Protests and Demands for Resignation

As frustrations mount, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain reinforced the demand for Pradhan’s resignation, stating that any discussions or inquiries regarding examination leaks should not proceed until that condition is met. He voiced the collective sentiment of students and MPs nationwide, reflecting an urgent call for accountability.

Additionally, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant has criticized Prime Minister Modi’s approach of addressing the paper leak matter through a video message, labelling it as insufficient. Sawant demanded that such significant issues be addressed in Parliament rather than through recorded statements, arguing that this diminishes the value of parliamentary discourse.

He suggested that the government’s announcements may serve as a diversionary tactic to sidestep pressing demands for accountability and action against implicated individuals. Sawant’s remarks echoed a sentiment within the Opposition that assertive, direct actions are necessary to address the crisis within the education system.

Prime Minister Modi’s comments included a commitment to implement “more strict” measures against those involved in paper leaks, indicating the government’s intention to act decisively. However, the effectiveness of such measures remains uncertain, as the Opposition continues to push for thorough discussions and systemic reforms.
