OpenAI to Introduce ChatGPT AI Smart Speaker with Advanced Features

The CSR Journal Magazine

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is preparing to launch its first hardware product, an AI-powered smart speaker. Spearheaded by CEO Sam Altman, the initiative marks the company’s foray into hardware technology, driven in part by the appointment of ex-Apple designer Jony Ive. This move follows the acquisition of Ive’s design firm, which reportedly cost OpenAI $6.5 billion in May 2025. Currently, a team of approximately 200 employees is engaged in creating hardware solutions for OpenAI.

Functional Capabilities of the Smart Speaker

The forthcoming smart speaker is expected to feature an integrated camera, allowing it to understand its environment. This capability will enable the device to recognize various objects and potentially identify users. Capable of engaging in conversations and answering queries, the speaker may also offer facial recognition features. This function could facilitate unlocking the device and enabling purchases, similar to Apple’s FaceID technology, enhancing the shopping experience. However, these capabilities also raise important questions regarding the security of biometric data.

Privacy Considerations

Unlike conventional smart speakers that activate only with a designated wake word, OpenAI’s model is likely to operate with continuous listening capabilities. Reports indicate that the device will be engineered to monitor and interpret ambient conversations, providing an ‘always-on’ function. This feature could recognize user behaviors, such as staying awake for an important event. Such capabilities may evoke privacy concerns, though OpenAI has not clarified its strategies to address these issues at this time.

Projected Release Timeline and Pricing

The smart speaker is not expected to be launched before early 2027. Estimates suggest that the pricing will range from $200 to $300 in the United States, approximately equating to Rs 18,000 to Rs 27,000 in India. OpenAI’s future plans may also include a variety of additional devices, such as smart glasses and a smart lamp, although the specifics of their development remain unconfirmed.

Competitive Landscape

OpenAI’s initiative arrives as several leading technology companies are increasingly exploring hardware enhancements. Notably, Apple is similarly rumored to be working on a range of AI-integrated gadgets, which may include smart glasses, an AI-driven pendant, and AirPods equipped with cameras. The competitive landscape suggests that these developments could significantly shape consumer technology in the near future.
