OpenAI has introduced a new initiative known as ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, designed to offer free access to its cutting-edge AI models to one lakh researchers affiliated with select universities and institutions. This programme aims to empower researchers to explore scientific inquiries relevant to their areas of expertise, rather than having OpenAI dictate the significant problems to address.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm for the programme on his social media platform, stating, “Very close to models that will significantly accelerate scientific discovery; the best way to do this is for us to empower scientists, not to try to figure out everything ourselves. We all deserve the benefits.” This reflects the organisation’s commitment to enhancing scientific research through advanced technological tools.

Phased Rollout and Initial Participation

The rollout of the programme is being conducted in phases, beginning this summer with an initial group of 10,000 researchers. Esteemed institutions like the Institute for Advanced Study and École normale supérieure are already participating. The initiative is expected to expand to a total of 100,000 researchers by 2027, facilitating a wide range of collaborative research opportunities.

Participants will gain access to OpenAI’s most advanced models, including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, and are permitted to include up to four collaborators from their respective institutions. This collaborative aspect aims to foster a diverse research environment, leveraging the strengths of various scholars in different fields.

Researchers will benefit from an array of over 75 specialised skills focused on life sciences, including areas such as genetics, genomics, protein modelling, and drug discovery. Moreover, the programme will provide tools that connect researchers to scientific literature, genomic databases, satellite imagery, and computational notebooks, enabling comprehensive analysis of intricate data.

Enhanced Support and Resources for Researchers

The initiative not only emphasises high-level research capabilities but also includes OpenAI’s codex model, which is tailored for coding assistance. This model aids researchers in writing and debugging code as well as analysing complex datasets. Additionally, the programme offers support for essential yet often overlooked academic tasks such as grant writing, literature reviews, and drafting manuscripts, thereby providing a holistic approach to research assistance.

To illustrate the capabilities of the new models, OpenAI reports that GPT-5.6 Sol has achieved a score of 83 per cent on FrontierMath Tier 4, which is a benchmark for advanced mathematical reasoning. This represents an improvement from a previous score of 72.5 per cent, indicating the model’s enhanced proficiency in handling complex mathematical tasks. Furthermore, on GeneBench Pro, a test focused on biological data analysis, the model successfully resolves just over 31 per cent of tasks.

In addition to access to advanced models, OpenAI is offering training sessions and hands-on support for researchers who may not be familiar with AI tools. This initiative is structured to ensure that all participants, regardless of their previous experience with AI, can effectively utilise these resources in their research.

Applications and Future Commitment

Applications for the programme are currently open to eligible degree-granting institutions with a strong research history. This new initiative is part of a broader commitment by OpenAI, which has allocated $250 million towards supporting scientific research through 2027. This is in line with other efforts such as the NextGenAI initiative and a partnership with the US Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, further underscoring OpenAI’s dedication to enhancing scientific discovery.
