Nembharat Set to Launch in India, Aims to Compete with Uber and Ola by Eliminating Driver Commissions

The CSR Journal Magazine

A new player is poised to enter India’s vibrant mobility sector. Following the introduction of Bharat Taxi, Nembharat is gearing up for its debut. This forthcoming ride-booking service intends to challenge established platforms such as Uber and Ola with a unique business model that eliminates driver commissions and surge pricing for riders. World Economic Mobility Limited (WEML) has confirmed plans for the launch, although specific launch dates remain undisclosed. Backed by the Narayanihiti Trust, Nembharat is described as a “prepaid and cashless” ride-hailing platform aimed at addressing long-standing issues within India’s ride-hailing industry.

Key Features of Nembharat

In a recent announcement, WEML emphasized that Nembharat will impose no commissions or subscription fees on drivers, allowing them to retain their entire earnings from each ride. For passengers, the service promises reasonable fares without the unpredictability of surge pricing, facilitated through its prepaid and cashless system. WEML aims to transform the current state of the mobility sector, which has been characterized by driver strikes over low wages and safety concerns from passengers regarding unpredictable fares.

Operational Scope and Infrastructure

While specific regions and locations for Nembharat’s operation have not yet been disclosed, WEML envisions creating a national transport network. Some details shared by the company indicate that Nembharat will integrate multiple transport modes, including cabs and auto-rickshaws. The service is designed to comply with guidelines set by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), intending to balance workforce standards with consumer protection measures. Discussions about safety protocols, including potential partnerships with local law enforcement, have not been explicitly confirmed at this stage.

Comparison with Bharat Taxi

The announcement of Nembharat follows closely behind that of Bharat Taxi. While both services share a commitment to reasonable fares and the absence of surge pricing, their business models differ significantly. Bharat Taxi operates as a cooperative service supported by individuals connected to the Amul cooperative, with no ownership by a public or private entity. Funded by the government and specifically the Ministry of Cooperation, Bharat Taxi works in Delhi and several regions in Gujarat. It offers an 80-20 revenue sharing model, allowing drivers to participate in the board and influence decision-making processes.

Future Developments and Expectations

As Nembharat prepares for its launch, further details are expected to be revealed in the lead-up. The objective remains to create a platform that effectively addresses both driver and passenger concerns in the ride-hailing space, which has witnessed significant challenges in recent years. The upcoming competition is likely to impact the dynamics of India’s mobility market, laying the groundwork for a variety of services catering to different consumer needs.
