Neerja Bhanot’s Heroic Actions Saved Lives During 1986 Pan Am Hijacking

The CSR Journal Magazine

On September 5, 1986, Pan Am Flight 73, while on its scheduled route from Mumbai to Frankfurt and New York City, arrived at Karachi International Airport. The aircraft, a Boeing 747, had 379 individuals onboard, including passengers and crew. During this stop, four armed members of the Abu Nidal Organisation stormed the aircraft, marking the beginning of a hostage crisis that would extend for approximately 17 hours. This tragic event ultimately resulted in at least 20 fatalities and over 100 injuries.

Neerja Bhanot, the senior flight purser, was only 22 years old at the time, just two days shy of her 23rd birthday. Her immediate actions would drastically alter the course of the incident. Upon realising the plane was being hijacked, she promptly alerted the pilots, enabling them to escape the cockpit and thus preventing the terrorists from taking control of the aircraft.

The immediate aftermath saw the passengers facing an escalating threat. The hijackers demanded to inspect passports, particularly targeting American nationals. In a bid to protect them, Neerja Bhanot and her crew members made the courageous decision to hide American passports, understanding the grave consequences that could follow if they fell into the wrong hands.

Neerja Bhanot’s Selfless Actions

Survivors of the hijacking have shared accounts that illuminate Neerja Bhanot’s bravery throughout the ordeal. Dharmendra Shah, then 21 years old and onboard the flight, recalled her efforts to keep the passengers calm, even managing to secure permission from the hijackers for individuals to access the washroom and for children to receive water. Notably, she continuously signalled for passengers to conceal their American passports, an action that would later be acknowledged by the US Department of Justice.

As the situation escalated, darkness enveloped the cabin when the aircraft’s power supply failed. Panic ensued, and the hijackers opened fire, which prompted Neerja to assist passengers in accessing the emergency exits. Shah vividly described the moment when Neerja, who could have fled to safety, instead chose to return and help children still trapped inside the cabin. Tragically, while performing this noble act, she was shot from behind.

Following these events, the flight attendants received acclaim for their acts of bravery. Neerja Bhanot was the sole crew member who lost her life during the hijacking. Her courageous actions earned her numerous posthumous awards, including the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry honour, as well as recognition from Pakistan and the United States.

Comparative Heroism in Aviation

Forty years later, the heroics of Neerja Bhanot have resurfaced in the context of a recent incident involving Captain Smit Machchhar aboard a flydubai flight. Captain Machchhar faced an assailant in the cockpit, which put the lives of 174 passengers at risk. Despite sustaining serious injuries, he managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing other crew members to confront the threat. Their collective action ultimately led to a safe landing.

While the circumstances of both incidents differ, the underlying instinct to protect lives remains consistent. Both Neerja Bhanot and Captain Smit Machchhar exemplified extraordinary bravery when confronted with extreme danger, prioritising the safety of others over their own well-being.

Neerja’s enduring legacy continues to serve as an inspiring narrative of courage in the face of adversity, illustrating how selfless choices made under pressure can save lives. These stories remind us of the profound impact that individuals, driven by a sense of responsibility, can make in critical situations.
